Mount Auburn Hospital Gets an ‘A’ for Safety from National Group

New Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, which assign A, B, C, D and F letter grades to hospitals nationwide and provide the most complete picture of patient safety in the U.S., were announced today by The Leapfrog Group, a national patient safety watchdog. Mount Auburn Hospital was one of 844 hospitals to receive an “A,” ranking among the safest hospitals in the United States, hospital officials announced. “We are committed to our patient’s safety and well-being here at Mount Auburn Hospital,” said Jeanette Clough, President and CEO of Mount Auburn Hospital. “Providing a safe experience is our first priority and it is an honor to be recognized with an “A” in this important category.”

“Protecting patients from harm is the most important charge for any hospital,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We recognize and appreciate ‘A’ hospitals’ vigilance and continued dedication to keeping their patients safe.”

Developed under the guidance of an Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D and F grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year.

Support Group for Family of Those Living With Mental Illness to Meet

NAMI Family Support Group is a free, structured, confidential, peer-led support group for family members, caregivers and loved ones of individuals living with mental illness, organizers announced.  

The next one will be held on Wed., Dec. 21, 7:30-9 p.m. in the Board Room of the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church at 207 Washington Street in Wellesley, organized by the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI).

Watertown Boy’s & Girl’s Club’s Holiday Party Coming Up

Watertown Boys & Girls Club announced it will be hosting their annual Youth Member Holiday Party on Wednesday, December 21 from 4–6 p.m. All Club members are invited to join staff and volunteers for a night of holiday-themed fun. There will be games, activities, food and lots of holiday cheer! Watertown Woman is Massachusetts’ Pick for Nurse Practitioner Excellence

Westwood Lodge announced that Komal Kenkare, PMHNP-BC, was selected by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) to receive the Nurse Practitioner Excellence Award for the state of Massachusetts. The Nurse Practitioner Award for Excellence is given annually to just one individual in each state who has demonstrated excellence in NP clinical practice. Kenkare is a Nurse Practitioner at the Westwood Lodge Partial Hospitalization Program, where she coordinates medication management for adult patients who have psychiatric and co-occurring addiction disorders. Kenkare collaborates with outpatient providers to set up community resources for her patients including sobriety meetings and visiting nurse appointments to help facilitate a positive transition back into the community. “I’m very thankful and honored to receive such a prestigious award so early in my career.” said Kenkare.

Crowd Gathers in Watertown to Mark 75th Anniversary of Attacks on Pearl Harbor

Dozens of Watertown’s veterans gathered on the Watertown Square Dock for a somber ceremony to mark one of the most infamous days in American history – the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Across the nation at noon, wreaths were laid in honor of the 75th anniversary of Japan’s sneak attack on the United States’ Pacific Fleet in Hawaii. In Watertown, the wreath was tossed into the Charles River with the veterans and dozens of others watching. The town has a connection to that tragic Sunday morning, said Veteran’s Officer Mark Comeiro. “At about 8 a.m. Japanese planes filled the skies over Pearl Harbor.

Watertown Church Hosts ‘Blue Christmas’ Service for Those Not So Jolly

The Church of the Good Shepherd announced it will host Blue Christmas, A Service of Hope and Healing on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m.

This interfaith gathering is particularly for those who are lonely, down, or feel the weight of loss during the holiday season. We welcome all people who want to stand together in honesty at a time when the culture presses us to be “jolly.” A light reception follows. All are welcome.

Rotary Club, Watertown Middle School Pack Meals for the Hungry

On Tuesday, November 22 over 90 kids, parents, teachers, community members and Rotarians headed to the Watertown Middle School to pack over 10,000 meals through the Stop Hunger Now program, the Rotary Club of Watertown announced. The Rotary Club of Watertown hosted the packing party not only to help feed thousands of people around the world but also as a way to foster a spirit of community service among the school children of Watertown. The meals prepared during the Stop Hunger Now Packing Party are distributed through feeding programs operated by partner organizations in developing countries that promote education, encourage children to attend school, improve students’ health and nutrition, address gender inequalities, stimulate economic growth, and fight child labor.
