Fourth of July Travel Advisory from the Mass Dept. of Transportation

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is encouraging the public during the holiday weekend, July 1-July 5, to take advantage of technology tools for drivers, travel during low volume times on roads, and note service hours at Registry Branch Offices and for the MBTA.   

For traffic and road conditions, drivers may use new technology:

Customers may dial 511 and select a route to hear real-time conditions for more than one thousand miles of roadways in Massachusetts and for some roads in other states. Watertown Rotary Club Welcomes its New President for 2016-17

The Watertown Rotary Club introduced its news president at a recent meeting held at the Watertown Police Station, the club announced. 

Lilia Weisfeldt attended her first Board of Directors Meeting as the new President of the Watertown Rotary Club for 2016-2017. Lilia is the owner as well as instructor at Ballroom in Boston which she opened in 2010 to pursue her passion in business as well as dance. Lilia brings the same high level of energy and enthusiasm to the Watertown Rotary Club that she demonstrates daily in her studio.

Woman Riding 200 Miles to Help Bring Salad Bar to Watertown School

Watertown-based ChopChop magazine encourages children and families to eat healthier, and in the latest issue the magazine interviewed a woman who will bicycle 200 miles in California to bring salad bars to Watertown’s schools. Jenn LaVardera works for Dole, and will be riding in the Tour de Fresh, which goes from from Napa Valley to Monterey to raise money for “Move Salad Bars to Schools” in Watertown. The registered dietitian told ChopChop about bicycling, and why she wants to help bring salad bars to schools. “Fruits and vegetables are the healthiest foods on the planet. Registry of Motor Vehicles Running Low Number Plate Lottery

MassDOT Registrar of Motor Vehicles Erin Deveney announced that applications for the 2016 Low Number Plate Lottery are now being accepted online or by U.S. mail. Starting this year, for the first time ever, customers will be able to enter the lottery online by visiting: https://secure.rmv.state.ma.us/myPlateLotto/.  Mail-in applications are available for download at www.MassRMV.com, or at Registry branch office locations across the Commonwealth.  Applications must be received online or postmarked by August 26, 2016, in order for the applicant to be eligible. “The low plate lottery is our customers’ favorite time of the year at the RMV,” said Registrar Erin Deveney.  “We are excited to have streamlined our application process this year to allow for online submissions, making it easier for our customers to enter the lottery. Not only can our customers skip the line by doing over 23 transactions at www.MassRMV.com, now they can also skip the stamp and enter the lottery electronically.”

This year, there are 183 plates that are part of the low plate lottery, surpassing the large pool of plates offered in 2015.

Reporter Honored for Story About Unsolved Murder of Ex-Watertown Police Officer

WBUR reporter and Watertown resident Bruce Gellerman received a New England regional award for his piece on the unsolved murder of a former Watertown Police Officer. Gellerman’s piece “Who Killed Gail Miles?: The Unsolved Murder of a Retired Watertown Cop,” won the Edward Murrow R. Award award for Best Investigative Reporting from the Radio Television Digital News Association. (See the story here). Miles, who was 61, was found brutally murdered on Dec. 3, 2011 in her Roxbury home.

Red Cross Running Community Blood Drive at The Arsenal Project

The Red Cross will be at the Arsenal Project in Watertown for a community blood drive on July 1.

Veteran Shares His Experiences in Vietnam on Watertown Cable Show

A Watertown veteran shares his story of service in the Vietnam War and recovering from post-traumatic stress disorder on the latest episode of A Veteran’s Story, hosted by Bob Kaprielian. A Veteran’s Story featuring SP4 Bob Quimby, US Army, who served in the Vietnam War during TET offensive. Bob was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge as well as the Purple Heart. After returning home from Vietnam, Bob was diagnosed with PDSD. Bob shares his story about dealing with PDSD and his recovery.
