See Which Watertown Police Officers are Running the Marathon

A dozen Watertown Police officers, including Chief Edward Deveau, will be taking on the 26.2 miles of the Boston Marathon this year. A year after the bombings at the marathon finish line, and after the bombing suspects got into a shootout with Watertown Police and were ultimately stopped in town, a dozen of Watertown’s finest will run the race. The Police Department received special entries from the Boston Athletic Association, and 12 officers stepped up to the challenge. Deveau has run the race before, but not for a few years. Watertown Fields will be Open, but Not Likely Ready for Gametime

After being closed due to wet conditions, Watertown’s recreation facilities will be open for use on Saturday, but perhaps not ready for primetime. Recreation Director Peter Centola, announced the fields would be open on April 5, but added “Please be advised that although the facilities will be open for use, they will most likely not ready for game play this weekend.” The game preparation by the Department of Public Works staff was hindered both by the recent rains and the preparation for the wake and funeral of fallen Boston Fire Lt. and Watertown native Edward Walsh, Centola said. “Although the fields are open, I would ask that all residents and groups who use the field, to only utilize areas that are dry and safe to participate on,” Centola said. To use of the facilities for games, groups must reserve them and get a permit, Centola said.

Item Made in Watertown Will be Featured in Red Sox World Series Celebration

When the Red Sox celebrate the 2013 World Series championship on Friday, a special item made in Watertown will be featured. The banner that will be unfurled during the celebration comes from New England Flag & Banner, according to a piece in the Boston Globe. The Dexter Avenue-based business provides banners, flags and other items for pro and college sports teams, according to the company website. This will not be the first championship banner made by New England Flag & Banner. They produced items for recent Celtics and Bruins championships and they also made banners used by Boston College and other teams, both local and around the nation.

Boston College, Watertown’s Jerry York Heading to Frozen Four

The Boston College men’s hockey team booked another trip to the NCAA Frozen Four under head coach Jerry York, a Watertown native and resident. The Eagles defeated Hockey East rival UMass-Lowell 4-3 in the Northeast Regional Final in Worcester on Sunday evening. BC had one goal leads in the first and second periods – one by Kevin Hayes and the second by Bill Arnold. Both times the Riverhawks tied the game up before the end of the period. In the third Lowell took a lead just 43 seconds into the period.

A battle between two teams linked through history and circumstance needed overtime to decide, and the outcome for Watertown proved to be a tough one to digest. The Raiders seemed to have Cardinal Spellman on the ropes during the Div.

Watertown’s Girl’s Basketball Comeback Falls Short in Lowell

Watertown captain Gabriella Coppola walked up and took the North Section runners-up trophy Saturday but she could not even muster a grin after the game against Arlington Catholic in Lowell on Saturday. For the second straight season the Raiders’ season ended in the section final. While the 2013 appearance at Tsongas Center was unexpected, this year Watertown was top seed and came in with a 21-1 record.

The Raiders will return to a familiar place after a three year hiatus after Watertown defeated Stoneham 48-34 in the MIAA Div. 3 North Section final at the Tsongas Center on Saturday. Watertown is heading to the TD Garden in Boston for the EMass final on Tuesday. On Saturday in Lowell, senior point guard Cesar Fulcar and sophomore guard Brednan Hoban led the way for the Raiders, with 15 and 14 points respectively.

Win by Watertown Girl’s Basketball Sets Up Big Day in Lowell

With the Watertown girl’s basketball team’s 51-39 victory over Hamilton-Wenham on Thursday night in Chelmsford, the Raiders set up a big day for Watertown hoops fans on Saturday. Both the boy’s and girl’s teams will play for North Section championships at the Tsongas Center in Lowell on March 8. The girl’s team, now 21-1, is the top seed in the North Section Div. 2 bracket. The Raiders face third-seeded Arlington Catholic (19-4) at 2 p.m. in Lowell.
