WHS Sports: Boys Basketball Season Ends, 2 Teams Seek Tourney Runs

Watertown’s boys’ basketball team looked like it might pull off a big upset in the Div. 3 North Section quarterfinal Saturday night, but ultimately fell short. 

The eighth-seeded Raiders (11-11) traveled to top-seeded North Reading (19-2) and had the Hornets on the ropes. Watertown held a 16-point halftime lead and was up 40-26 with four minutes left in the third quarter. North Reading, however, turned it around and won 61-53, ending the Raiders season. Watertown Falls in First Round of State Basketball Tournament

A pesky Bedford boys basketball team came into Watertown High School Wednesday night and ended the Raiders season. The sixth seeded Raiders started the game well with a 9-0 run, but the Raiders  in 11-9) fell behind the 11th seeded Bedford team, which earned a MIAA Div. 3 North tourney berth by having a winning record against Div. 3 opponents despite a 6-14 regular season, according to a report on Wicked Local Watertown. The Buccaneers rallied to take a narrow lead at the end of the first quarter and at the half.

Guess Who’s the Number 1 Seed in the State Basketball Tourney!

The Watertown girl’s basketball team will look to keep its undefeated season going as the top seed in the MIAA Div. 2 North section tournament. The boys made the tourney too! The Raiders finished 18-0 and got the top seed. They got a bye for the first round and will host the winner of the Marblehead-Tewksbury game in a quarterfinal on Thursday at 7 p.m., according to the Boston Herald.

The Raiders team had a tough start to the 2014-15 boys’ basketball season against their rivals from Belmont Tuesday night. The game started well for Watertown, which lead by 8 at the end of the first quarter, and 26-23 at halftime. The Marauders, however, looked different in the second half, outscoring the Raiders 43-23 in the second half. Belmont hit six 3-pointers in the second half after making none in the first half. Watertown was led by senior guard Mike Hagopian, who scored 18 points including two 3-pointers.
