IT’S A GREAT DAY TO LEARN ABOUT:

The Registry of Motor Vehicles will offer a free workshop on license renewal and REAL ID for residents. Topics include: · What is the difference between “Standard ID” and “Real ID” driver’s licenses and ID cards; · How to renew a Massachusetts Driver’s License or Massachusetts Identification (ID) Card; and What are the new federal and state requirements for renewing a Driver’s License or ID card Staff from State Senator William Brownsberger’s office will be on hand to issue NEW MBTA Senior and Transportation Access Pass (TAP) CharlieCards, and to help with questions regarding the MBTA’s automated fare collection system. New cards will be processed for first-time Seniors (65 + with proof of age). Your new card will arrive by mail. This service was arranged through the office of State Senator William Brownsberger.

February is Full of Activities at the Watertown Senior Center

February may be the shortest month, but the Watertown Senior Center has a long list of activities for the month. The Watertown Council on Aging provided the following information:

HEART HEALTH MONTHHelp us to celebrate Heart Health Month! This year Marie McCune, RN from Mt. Auburn Hospital, will speak to us about how to keep your heart healthy. After, we will enjoy a light brunch.

Watertown Senior Center Hosting Holiday Boutique This Week

Get your holiday shopping started with the Friends of the Watertown Council on Aging’s Holiday Boutique. The sale features handmade knitted items, jewelry, ornaments and holiday décor. The Boutique will be held at the Watertown Senior Center, 31 Marshall St., on Thursday, Nov. 8 and Friday, Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

LUNCH & LEARN WATERTOWN’S SCHOOL GARDENS & THE SENIOR CENTER

Join Judy Fallows, official garden coordinator for Watertown’s public schools for the past three seasons, as she talks about the connections in elementary schools between classrooms and gardens. She will speak a bit about the challenges of maintaining the gardens in summer and the wonderful volunteers who help with this. Learn about the connections with the school food service and harvests for school cafeterias. Judy will also talk about the progress of the Senior Center gardens.

Representative from Congresswoman Clark’s Office to Visit Watertown

A representative from Congresswoman Katherine Clark’s office will be in Watertown three times in upcoming months to meet with the public, according to the Town of Watertown. The following information was sent out by Town officials:

AARP Presenting Smart Driver Course at Watertown Senior Center

Recharge your driving skills! AARP Driver Safety helps drivers stay safe, educated and confident behind the wheel with the AARP Smart Driver™ Course, the AARP announced in a press release. These courses are designed to help drivers age 50-plus familiarize themselves with the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate vehicles more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. 
The course will be offered Wednesday, April 25 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Watertown Senior Center, 31 Marshall St., Watertown, MA 02472. Call 617-972-6490 for information or to register. In addition to learning safety strategies that can reduce the likelihood of a crash, participants of the course will learn how aging, medications, alcohol, and other health-related issues affect driving ability, and how to adjust driving accordingly to allow for these changes.

Town Council President Sees Development, Communication & Schools as Priorities for New Term

As the new Town Council term begins, Watertown Council President Mark Sideris looked toward the next two years and said that some of the major focus will be on traffic, development and communication with the public, as well as the upcoming school building projects. Newly elected Town Councilors, School Committee members and Library Trustees were sworn in by Town Clerk John Flynn on Tuesday night at the Mosesian Center for the Arts. After his swearing in, Sideris addressed the audience in the theater at the Arts Center. Development has been a big issue for several years, and Sideris said he would like to take a new approach at looking at new projects in town, from those completed, to those under construction and projects just getting started. “I will be working with the Community Development and Planning Department to coordinate a field trip to visit the sites that have been developed,” Sideris said.
