Watertown’s New Director of Senior Services Has ‘a Commitment to Seniors’

Lydia McCoy has been appointed Watertown’s new Director of Senior Services. Watertown’s new Director of Senior Services, Lydia McCoy, comes to town with range of experience working with seniors. Last week, City Manager George Proakis announced McCoy’s appointment. She will oversee the Council on Aging, the Watertown Senior Center, and the Watertown Food Pantry. “Ms. McCoy has a broad range of experience, an educational background, and a real commitment to seniors,” Proakis told the City Council.

City Buildings Closing Early for Storm, Council Meeting Postponed

The City of Watertown sent out the following information:

The City Manager is closing City Hall, the Library, and the Senior Center at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, as storm conditions are expected to worsen this afternoon. All afterschool and evening recreation programs are also canceled. All items scheduled for this evening’s City Council meeting will be continued to a new meeting scheduled for Thursday, March 16th. As a reminder, a snow emergency went into effect at 12 p.m. Tuesday, March 14. On-street parking is banned, and cars left on the street are subject to towing.

The Presidents’ Day holiday will impact the trash and recycling pickup this week, and multiple city facilities will be closed. Tracy and recycling service in Watertown will be delayed by a day this week. So, for instance, homes with a normal Monday collection will be on Tuesday this week. The City of Watertown announced that City Hall and the Senior Center will be closed in observance of Presidents’ Day on Monday, February 20, 2023. The Watertown Library also announced that it will be closed on Monday for the Presidents’ Day holiday.

On Friday, Dec. 23, Watertown City Hall and the Watertown Senior Center will close at noon, but the Watertown Library will be open. The Library will be closed on Saturday, Dec. 24 and Sunday, Dec.

The Labor Day holiday will impact trash and recycling, as well as City facilities such as City Hall and the Library. City officials announced that Watertown City Hall, the Watertown Free Public Library and the Senior Center will be closed in observance of Labor Day on Monday, September 5, 2022. The City also announced that due to the Labor Day holiday the trash and recycling pickup will be moved to Tuesday, September 6 through Saturday, September 10, 2022. Therefore, a home that normally has trash and recycling on Monday will be on Tuesday, those on Tuesday will be Wednesday, and so on. Veterans, Seniors Can Apply for Property Tax Work-Off Program

The following information was provided by the City of Watertown:

The City is offering the Property Tax Work-Off Program to Watertown homeowners who are Veterans or aged 60 and older. This program allows for up to ten residents a $1,500 deduction from their property tax bill in exchange for 100 to 105 hours of work for a City department, from July 1, 2022 until March 1, (Based on $14.25 (2022) or $15 (2023) per hour State minimum wage for all positions.)

To qualify for consideration, applicants must complete the attached application and be:

• Age 60 or older and Retired; OR a Veteran

• Own and occupy the property for which the taxes are deducted

• Applicant’s skills must match those needed by the participating City departments. Past projectshave included: computer data entry, helping to run Zoom programs, answering phones,administrative tasks and projects for the Library, City Hall, Schools Recreation, Veterans orPublic Health Departments, or for the Senior Center. • The City gives preference to individuals whose annual income is 300% of the 2022 FederalPoverty level or less ($40,770 for single, $54,930 for married couple), and who are new to theprogram, and then other applicants will be considered if slots are available. Copies of most recentincome tax returns will be requested to verify income.
