WHS Sports: Boys Soccer Team Moves on in Tourney, Swimming Relays Qualify for States

Watertown will host some Monday night futbol when the boys soccer team hosts a North Section quarterfinal on at Victory Field. 

The fifth-seeded Raiders rolled in the first round game against No. 12 Whittier Tech, winning 4-0. Because 13th-seeded Bedford beat the fourth-seeded Newburyport, Watertown gets to host the tournament game. The game begins at 7 p.m. on Nov. 6 with the winner moving on to the North Semifinal on Wednesday at Woburn High School against the winner of the Wayland-Weston game.

WHS Sports: Football Falls in Last Minute, Field Hockey Rolling, Soccer Racking up Wins

The Watertown football team fought back after being down to Wakefield, but could not hold off the Warriors Friday night. Down in the fourth quarter, the Raiders tied the game at 14 with just over 5 minutes left in the game. Wakefield got the ball late and had first and goal at the 1 with 32 seconds left in the fourth. Watertown’s defense held the Warriors for two downs but Wakefield scored with 14 ticks remaining to win 21-14 in Wakefield. The loss puts the Raiders’ record at 3-4 for the season and 1-4 in the Middlesex League. Watertown should make the MIAA North Section Div.

WHS Sports: 4 Raiders Teams in State Tournament Action Over the Weekend

This weekend,  Watertown High School had teams playing in the football, field hockey, boys soccer and volleyball state tournaments. 
Volleyball
The Watertown High School volleyball team cliched its first state tournament birth ever during the last regular season match. The Raiders (11-9) then had another first, claiming their first tourney win by sweeping host West Roxbury 3-0 last Thursday. Watertown will travel to take on Middlesex League rival Burlington (18-3) on Monday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. in the North Section Div. 2 quarterfinal.

WHS Sports: Boys Soccer Secures Tourney Spot, Runners Excel at League Meet

The Watertown boys soccer team is back in the MIAA State Tournament after a one-year hiatus and they will play their first round match at home. The Raiders finished strong down the stretch to end the year with a 9-7-2 record and they got the eighth seed in the Div. 3 North Section tournament. They will host ninth seed North Reading (9-7-2) on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. at Victory Field.

Two Raider Athletes Excelling in College, See Who Made the League All-Stars

Two Watertown High School grads have found success on the college athletic fields this fall. 

Former Raiders quarterback Joey Farrar has switched sides of the line of scrimmage and “is now wreaking havoc for his opponents on defense playing in the safety spot” at Salve Regina according to the profile on Wicked Local Watertown written by Frank Santarpio. Farrar made 47 tackles and four interceptions for the Seahawks, who went 8-2 and won an ECAC bowl game. Over at Babson College, former Watertown field hockey goalie Kayla Costa has enjoyed her time on the field and off. She started her junior and senior year, and was named to the Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Div. III All-America Second Team after giving up only 10 goals and going 17-3 this year, according to a story on story on Wicked Local Watertown by Scott Souza.

WHS Sports: Raiders Field Hockey, Football and Soccer in State Tourney

The post season begins this week for the streaking Watertown field hockey team, which seeks an eighth straight State Championship. Coach Eileen Donahue’s squad has not been beaten in 155 games and set a new national record. The streak includes a perfect 17-0 in 2015. Top seeded Watertown will have a first round bye, and then hosts with winner of the game between eight-seed Wilmington (10-6-2) and nine-seed Wayland (8-5-3). The MIAA Div.

SPORTS: WHS Alumna Sets College Record, Girls’ Soccer Makes States

With two goals on Tuesday, Stonehill College field hockey player and WHS alumna Erika Kelly set a new Northeast-10 Conference scoring record. The senior All-America player’s 92nd goal broke the conference record of 91 goals by UMass-Lowell’s Sammy Macy. The goals came in a 4-3 loss to Merrimack. A 3-0 win over Mystic Valley at Victory Field earned Watertown a trip to the state tournament. WHS Girl’s Soccer Team Makes Tourney
Hannah Cook scored the first goal with five minutes left in the first half, and junior captain Sidar Akisik added two more for the Raiders, according to the report on Wicked Local Watertown. While Coach Kaz Keuchkarian’s team struggled for wins this season, the Watertown earned the postseason berth after finishing at the .500 mark against Div.

Watertown Soccer Player Makes NE Revolution Development Academy

Watertown’s Samuel Deossa was chosen from players from around New England to be part of the the New England Revolution’s Under 14 Academy squad, the Major League Soccer team announced this week. Deossa, a midfielder/forward, will play with the Revolution Academy against other development teams from across the country in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy league. They also receive invitations to play in international tournaments. The academy is part of the program to develop players to play professional soccer. The Revolution Academy sent out the following release:
