Watertown Calls Snow Emergency, City Facilities Closed Friday

The following announcement was provided by the City of Watertown:

The City of Watertown has announced a sow emergency for Friday, Feb. 25 with a storm expected to drop several inches of snow headed toward the area. Also, City Hall, Library and Senior Center will be closed on Friday due to the storm. The City sent out the following announcement:

The Superintendent of Public Works is declaring a Snow Emergency effective 1:00 AM, Friday, February 25, 2022. Watertown is expecting upwards of 8-inches of snow Friday.

Snow Storm: Watertown Trash Pick up Postponed, Restaurant Serving Warm Specialty Drink

Snow falls on Watertown on Jan. 7, 2022. Trash and recycling pick up will be delayed by the snow storm for residents with a Friday collection day. The Watertown Department of Public Works announced Friday morning that due to higher snowfall than projected, the City’s trash contractor — Republic — moved the trash and recycling collection from Friday to Saturday. Watertown Declares Snow Emergency for Upcoming Storm

The Superintendent of Public Works is declaring a Snow Emergency effective 12:01 AM, Friday, January 7, 2022. Watertown is expecting greater than 6 inches of snow. The Snow Emergency shall remain in effect until further notice. On street parking will be banned and any motor vehicle left on the street will be subject to towing.

Eversource to Prune Trees Near Power Lines in Watertown in January

The following announcement was provided by the Watertown Department of Public Works:

Eversource, and it’s subcontractor Tree Tech, is working citywide on tree pruning around power lines throughout January. This work is necessary to maintain safe operations of the power grid and reduce future outages. Eversource expects to have 2 tree crews in town initially, then eventually increase that number to 5 crews total over the course of January. Trees are often a great addition to the landscape of any community. However, trees are the leading causes of power outages in our service territory as they are for many utilities across the country.

More Than a Ton of Clothing Collected in First Month of Watertown’s Curbside Textile Collection

The following announcement was provided by the City of Watertown:

The City of Watertown, working with HELPSY, the largest clothing collector in the northeast, has collected nearly 3,000 pounds of clothing during the first month of curbside pickup. By collecting unwanted clothing for recycling, thousands of pounds of unnecessary trash have been diverted from local landfills. This not only helps the environment but reusing and recycling textiles also saves Watertown money by reducing tipping fees or landfill maintenance costs. Textile pickups are ongoing and offered weekly. Residents can schedule online at helpsy.co/watertownma.

Watertown DPW Hosting Styrofoam Recycling Event, Paper Shredding & Textile Collection

The following information was provided by the Watertown DPW:

Watertown Public Works will be hosting a Recycling Event for residents on Saturday, November6th at the Jewish Day School located at 57 Stanley Avenue in Watertown, MA. Elements of the event include Styrofoam collection, paper shredding and textile collection. HELPSY, the northeast’s largest clothing collector, will have a truck and staff on hand to help with textile collection—diverting these items from disposal at local landfills. Watertown has also formed a partnership with HELPSY to offer residents weekly curbside pick-up of clothing and other household textiles. Beginning November 5th, pickups can be scheduled online at www.helpsy.co/watertownma. According to the EPA, Textile waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the United States … occupying nearly 5% of all landfills.

Trash Collection Delayed Due to Tropical Storm Henri

A Self-Guided Stormwater Walk Designed by a River Conservation Group

A self-guided tour of Watertown’s stormwater drainage system will show people how rain water gets from the streets to the Charles River. The walk features some of the stormwater devices you can see on the street that you would recognize, such as a catch basin, and some that are not as obvious, like a bioswale. There are also parts of the stormwater system where the water enters the river. The Watertown Department of Public Works collaborated with the Mystic River Watershed Association to create the tour, said Town Engineer Matthew Shuman. “Here’s some great activities we put together with the Mystic River Watershed Association for kids and adults to do to get some fresh air during these trying times … go for a stormwater walk,” Shuman said.
