Prospective Young Scientists Get a Look at a Real Lab at Watertown’s Kymera Therapeutics

A group of aspiring young scientists got a glimpse inside a Watertown company that does cutting-edge biopharmaceutical research. The high school age students recently visited Kymera Therapeutics’ offices and labs at Arsenal Yards as part of a field trip organized by MassBioEd’s Summer Program. MassBioEd partners with the LEAH project and LabCentral to offer a lab-based summer internship program to rising high school juniors and seniors. They spend four days a week learning about biotechnology tools and improving their technical skills at LabCentral in Cambridge. One day each week, they visit life science companies and organizations to see how the skills and tools are used.

This Week: Council Vote on Part of Mt. Auburn St. Project, ZBA Meets But Big Projects Delayed

The City of Watertown will have to get permission from residents along Mt. Auburn Street to temporarily gain access to a portion of their property during the upcoming construction project. Also this week, the Zoning Board of Appeals will meet, but some anticipated projects will not be heard. City Council

Tuesday night, the City Council will vote on taking of easements to be able to construct the Mt. Auburn Street renovation.

Middlesex Sheriff’s Office Celebrates Youth Public Safety Academy Graduation

Middlesex Sheriff’s Office Youth Public Safety Academy cadets from Arlington/Cambridge, Belmont/Watertown, Burlington and Tyngsborough were recognized during a graduation ceremony held at Chelmsford High School on Friday, Aug. 4. Middlesex Special Sheriff Amoroso Cefalo was joined by Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan; Tyngsborough Town Manager Matthew Hanson; Watertown Police Chief Thomas Rocca and officials from all the communities to honor the graduates. Now in its 22nd year, YPSA is focused on providing cadets with educational lessons around personal and family safety and other health and wellness topics.

The following information was provided by the Watertown Police Department. Arrests

Aug. 8, 12:01 a.m.: Officers patrolling in Watertown Square queried the plates of a BMW and discovered the registration was suspended, and the owner’s license was suspended. The vehicle was pulled over and confirmed that the owner was driving. Joshua Rivers, 32, of Watertown was arrested for driving with a suspended license, driving an uninsured vehicle, and driving with a suspended registration.

DCR Announces Arsenal Street Lane Closures Beginning This Week

A lane will be closed on the east end of Arsenal Street, the Mass. Department of Conservation and Recreation announced. The DCR sent out the following announcement:

Beginning on Monday, August 21, 2023, and continuing through Friday, September 8, 2023, the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will close the right lane of Arsenal Street (westbound) from Greenough Boulevard to Greenough Boulevard in the Town of Watertown to accommodate curbing and guardrail installation work. Traffic patterns will be clearly marked, and a police detail will be on site.

Watertown Summer Basketball League Final Going to Deciding Game 3

Number 2 seed and defending champion New Day forced a deciding Game 3 to even the 2023 Watertown Recreation Summer Basketball League Championship series following a 62-54 comeback, victory in overtime over top seed Donohue’s Kaos Club. Trailing by six, 27-21, at halftime, New Day went on an extended run midway through the second half. Stonehill graduate Andre Tongo was the spark in New Day’s comeback, dropping 13 of his team-high 15 points in the second half. Amherst’s Johnny McCarthy followed up with 12 points, while Akeem Williams rounded out the trio in double figures with 10 points.
