Watertown Field Hockey Working on the Basics With Hopes it Will Pay Off at the End of the Season

Watertown High School’s field hockey team has jumped out to a hot start, winning their first four games without allowing a goal, but the team is not satisfied and looks for ways to improve their performance. Thursday, Watertown defeated Melrose 7-0, led by a hat trick by Aislin Devaney. Four others scored goals: Taylor Lambo, Lizzie Loftus, Maggie Driscoll and Rachel Egan, and assists were added by Ally Fujix, Maggie Driscoll (2), Loftus (2), Molly Driscoll and Egan.

In the first of three candidate forums for the Watertown Election, the candidates for Councilor At-Large will be appearing live at the virtual event on Thursday, Sept. 30 at 6 p.m.

The forum will be broadcast live on Watertown Cable Access TV, and also the public can join on Zoom. It is co-hosted by Watertown News and Watertown Cable. The moderator will be Jim Vershbow, co-anchor of the Watertown Weekly News on Watertown Cable. The Councilors At-Large are elected by the entire town.

Russo’s Closing Adds to Watertown Schools’ Struggle to Get Food for Lunches

The Watertown Public Schools are having a trouble ensuring they are getting enough food for the school lunches, due in part to the closing of Russo’s market. Shortages in food deliveries from national food chains, plus the loss of a key local source of food has left the Watertown Schools school lunch program uncertain what they will be able to serve to students each day, Watertown’s Director of School Nutrition Brandon Rabbit told WBZ Channel 4. Adding to the difficulty in securing items for school breakfasts and lunches is the closing of Russo’s. The market, which closed after decades in Watertown on Sept. 18, used to be a key provider to the Watertown Schools and about 90 other districts.

Watertown Police Department Receives Accreditation from State Commission

The Watertown Police Department was accredited by the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission. The Watertown Police Department received word that it successfully completed the re-accreditation process with the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission, during which it had to show it follows professional standards. The program is a voluntary one, in which police departments “strive to meet and maintain standards that have been established for the profession by the profession,” according to the Commission. MPAC Executive Director Rick J. Rathburn commended the Watertown Police for its accomplishment in a letter to Watertown Police Chief Michael Lawn. “This prestigious status has been awarded for another three-year period ending September 2024,” Rathburn wrote.

Family & Friends Celebrate Memory of Girl Who Built Strong Friendships, Inspired People in Her Lifetime

Charlie BreitroseFriends of Lora Karaguesian sit on the Buddy Bench at Hosmer School dedicated in her memory. Watertown’s Lora Karaguesian’s life was cut short, but in her 11 years she made many close friendships and lasting memories. Recently, her family and friends gathered to remember her big smile and bright personality, and leave a lasting memorial at her old elementary school. On Sept. 18, a bench with a plaque in Lora’s memory was dedicated by more than 30 family members and friends.
