Good Reviews for 3-Story WHS Design, Call to Move Non-School Functions Out

The three-story design for the new Watertown High School got good reviews from the School Building Committee and residents who tuned into the meeting Wednesday night. Also, there were calls for the District Administration offices and the Facilities Department to another location to free up room at WHS. The main academic building, proposed the property where the Phillips School and Senior Center now sit, was shortened by a story after concerns were raised about how big it would be compared to the surrounding neighborhood at a meeting in October.

Two Local Leaders on Chamber’s Panel for Most Influential Business People of Color

The leader of a Watertown-based theatre company and a vice president at Tufts Health Plan will be a panelists for the Newton-Needham Regional Chamber’s 50 Most Influential Business People of Color event. Michael Bobbitt, who took over as artistic director at NewRep in August 2019, will be one of five people on the panel at the event that will take place virtually on Nov. 12. He will be joined by Juan Lopera, vice president of marketing and Rhode Island Medicare at Tufts Health Plan, headquartered on Mt. Auburn Street.

See How Watertown Voted for President, Senate and Ballot Questions

Watertown voters came out in huge numbers for the 2020 Presidential Election, and heavily supported Joe Biden and other Democrats on the ballot. The voter turnout for the Nov. 3 election in Watertown was 76.09 percent, or 19,197 ballots cast. This was slightly higher than the 2016 election when 18,402 votes were cast, or 75.89, in an election which also featured the local ballot question on the Community Preservation Act. The Biden/Harris ticket got 14,885 votes locally (77.5 percent), while Donald Trump and Mike Pence received 3,795 votes (19.7 percent).

The latest designs for the new Watertown High School show a shorter academic building on the Phillips School site, with the gym, auditorium and dining area on the site of the current school. The design of the school will be discussed Wednesday, Nov. 4 as the School Building Committee seeks to choose a preferred design.

Watertown Martial Arts Instructor Nominated for National Award, See How to Vote

Watertown martial arts instructor Michael Pepe has been nominated for a national award, and people can vote through Nov. 16. A Watertown martial arts instructor has been nominated for a national instructor of the year award, and people can vote online through mid-November. Watertown’s Michael Pepe, from the Shorin-ryu Karatedo and Kubudo Association of America, received a nomination for the 2020 Greatmats National Striking Martial Arts Instructor of the Year. Pepe grew up and Watertown and retired from the Watertown Fire Department after a 31-year career, according to his biography on the SKKAA website.

Photo Exhibit at Watertown Library Extended, Captures Images of New England Coast

One of the photos that will be in Joseph Weiler’s exhibit at the Watertown Library, “Bluenose II.” The “New England Coast: Islands, Schooners & Ocean” photo exhibit at the Watertown Public Library has been extended for two weeks. The Exhibit will close on Nov. 14. The exhibit features the work of Watertown photographer Joseph Weiler and had originally be scheduled to run in the month of October.

2020 VOTER GUIDE: New Polling Places; Contested Races & Ballot Questions

The vote to decide the winner of the 2020 Presidential Election will be Nov. 3, but there are a number of other races in which Watertown residents can cast their vote, as well as up to four ballot questions. Also, three precincts will not be in their normal location. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Watertown. The Presidential race tops the ballot, but there are also races for U.S. Senate and Congress along with the ballot questions.
