Watertown High School wrestlers practice moves. The team has been one of the most successful teams in school history. In an otherwise quiet corner Watertown High School, 30-some students work up a sweat and turn the small room into a steam room while doing a workout that looks like it belongs in a Spartan Race and an Army bootcamp. “Most people would be done after that,” said WHS assistant wrestling coach Andrew Scopa. “They are just getting started.”

Residents Air Concerns About Galen St., Traffic & Watertown’s Planning Process

Town Councilor Lisa Feltner holds a computer showing drawings of a proposed development on Galen Street. She hosted a meeting at the Watertown Library to hear residents’ concerns about the proposed zoning change and related issues. More than 40 residents concerned about a proposed biotech project on Galen Street crammed into a meeting room at the Watertown Library Wednesday evening. They worried about what would be built there, and the traffic impact on one of the most congested roadways in town, and how projects are approved in Watertown. Those at the meeting said they would like to find a way to put a temporary halt to development, at least in the Galen Street area, so that a plan can be formed to improve the whole area.

Watertown Police Investigating Shooting Near Pleasant Street

One man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg after a fight broke out near Pleasant Street on Tuesday night. The 21-year-old Waltham man who was shot is expected to live. The incident took place not far from the Bank of America ATM kiosk on Pleasant Street. Police continued to try to get to the bottom of what happened and could be seen looking for evidence on Wednesday. Police have not identified any suspects, yet, according to Watertown Police Lt. James O’Connor.

Watertown field hockey coach Eileen Donahue will receive an award at the Massachusetts Celebration of Girls and Women in Sports Day. Watertown High School field hockey coach Eileen Donahue will add to her growing list of accolades during the Massachusetts Celebration of Girls and Women in Sport Day. On Feb. 7, Donahue will be one of four women to receive the Massachusetts Women in Athletics Distinguished Service Award. The award will be presented at the annual event held at Faneuil Hall in Boston.

Councilor Explains Her Decision to Delay Vote on Galen Street Zoning; Info Meeting Planned

The proposal for properties on Galen Street if requested zoning changes go through. Last week, Town Councilor Lisa Feltner decided to invoke a rule that delays the vote of the Town Council until the next meeting. The issue being considered was the rezoning of some parcels along Galen Street requested by a developer. Below you can read her letter explaining her decision. Feltner also announced that she has booked space at the Watertown Library on Wednesday night to meet with residents, and hear their concerns about the proposal.

Watertown Deputy Fire Chief Graduates from Management Training Program

Watertown Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Nicholson, second from left, at the graduation of the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy’s Chief Fire Officer Management Training Program. Watertown Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Nicholson recently graduated Massachusetts Firefighting Academy’s Chief Fire Officer Management Training Program. Attendees of the 14-week program learned about the management fire departments not related to fire-suppression. As part of the course, Nicholson had to write a research paper that identified a problem or challenge facing the Watertown Fire Department in which he proposed a solution. He then had to present the proposal to be considered by a panel of municipal officials.

A panel discussion to support immigrant communities in Watertown and Middlesex County will be held at the Library on Feb. 20. Middlesex DA Marian Ryan, State Rep. Jonathan Hecht and Watertown Police Chief Michael Lawn will host a the conversation. According to Rep. Hecht’s office, the event is a panel discussion and Q&A on immigration in Middlesex County cities, towns, and courthouses, and aims to foster a supportive environment for our local immigrant residents..
