Watertown Seeks Grant to Bring in New Bike Share Option

Watertown could see a shift in bike share options, with the current provider leaving and Town officials seeking help to bring in another well-known brand. Last week, Assistant Town Manager Steve Magoon told the Town Council that the Town will be joining other communities to apply for a grant to bring in bike share docks for Bluebikes, which used to be known as Hubway. “The Lime Bikes option in town is no longer an option,” Magoon said. “We are looking to bring Bluebikes.” Lime Bike has reduced the number of bikes in town, so it no longer provides a reliable option for Watertown residents.

WHS Principal Retiring, District Starting Process to Find Successor

Watertown High School Principal Shirley Lundberg announced she will be retiring at the end of the 2019-20 school year. Her successor will be selected after a process that will begin in December and end in February. Lundberg is in her seventh year leading WHS. She announced her retirement to her staff in the spring and to parents in the first newsletter of the new school year. “This school year will be my last with Watertown, as at the end of it I intend to join my husband in retirement.

Watertown to Hold Concert, Breakfast to Mark Veterans Day

The Town of Watertown has two events planned to recognize Veterans Day 2019, including a concert featuring big band music and a breakfast and ceremony. On Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019 from 6-8:30 p.m., The World Famous Hal McIntyre Orchestra, directed by Don Pentleton and featuring Sinatra vocalist, Steve Marvin will perform at the Watertown Free Public Library. The concert will be held in the Watertown Savings Bank Meeting Room. It is open to all veterans and the public.

Candidates in the Watertown Town Election will be appearing at an election forum co-hosted by Watertown News and Watertown Cable Access Television. The Candidate Forum will be held on Thursday, Oct. 24 from 6:30-9 p.m. It will be held in the Lecture Hall at Watertown High School, 50 Columbia St. This year’s Watertown voters will vote for Town Council President, Town Councilors At-Large, District Councilors, School Committee and Board of Library Trustees. The evening begins with statements from un-opposed candidates at 6:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., the seven candidates for Town Councilor At-Large will be answering questions.

The Commander’s Mansion in Watertown. Watertown’s Commander’s Mansion will host a Halloween celebration with games, food and other spooky fun. The ‘Lil Monster Mash will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Commander’s Mansion, 440 Talcott Ave., Watertown. The free event is for Watertown families of children from PreK to fifth grade.

Museum of Science Teams with Watertown-Based Child Care Network to Teach STEM

Students at a Bright Horizons child care center participate in a challenge created by the Museum of Science. The Museum of Science has teamed up with Watertown-based Bright Horizons to get young children at their centers excited about engineering and science. Using the museum’s EiE Wee Engineer program, Bright Horizons curriculum encourages children to be creative and innovative as they participate in hands-on challenges designed to nurture their love of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and demonstrate that there is more than one way to solve a problem, according to Rachel Robertson, Vice President, Education & Development at Bright Horizons. “As a Watertown-based organization, we’re very familiar with the Museum of Science and the high caliber educational programming it offers, both in the museum and through its work in schools across the region,” Robertson said. “At Bright Horizons, we’re always looking at new and innovative approaches that not only prepare our students for elementary school, but also lay the foundation for a lifelong love of learning.
