Watertown Starts Budget Planning with Rare Surplus for Fiscal 2021

The new growth in Watertown, due largely to the development in town, along with an increase in permit fees being paid to the town are two main factors for the Town starting with a surplus as planning begins for the Fiscal 2021 budget. Tuesday night, Town Manager Michael Driscoll presented the Preliminary Fiscal 2021 Budget Overview to the Town Council. The forecasted expenditures for FY21, which begins July 1, 2020, is $155.77 million. The projected revenues are $156.33 million, leaving a surplus of $556,829, Driscoll said.

Council Subcommittee Supports Agreement with Adult Use Marijuana Dispensary

A Town Council Subcommittee voted to recommend the full Council approve a Community Host Agreement with the group seeking to open an adult use marijuana dispensary in Watertown. The agreement is needed for the applicants, Natural Selections, to apply for a license to sell marijuana for recreational use from the state’s Cannabis Control Commission. The legislation that came out of the ballot question legalizing the sale of adult use marijuana does not allow the Town to prevent all dispensaries from opening in town, but it has limited the number to three. Before it can open, the dispensary would not only need a license from the state but also a special permit from the Watertown Zoning Board of Appeals. Natural Selections previously received approval from the Town and the state to open a medical marijuana dispensary at 23 Elm Street in East Watertown.

WHS Sports: Raiders Earn Two Victories Over Belmont, Football Falls

Two Watertown High School teams beat archrival Belmont last week, while the Raiders struggled on the football field. Boys Soccer

The Raiders boys soccer team not only beat the Marauders Friday, but the 1-0 victory gave them their seventh win in a row. Junior Nicholas DiPace’s second half goal proved to be the winner for Watertown in the game played at Victory Field on Friday afternoon. The Raiders have not let in a goal in the last four games

Watertown improved to 7-2-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the Middlesex League. Field Hockey

The Watertown High School field hockey team has also gone on a long winning streak, winning eight in a row, including a 3-1 win over Belmont last Wednesday.

Police Log: Multiple Car Broken Into, Fire Starts in Bin

Sept. 27, 4:21 p.m.: Target security spotted a woman taking items off the shelf and put them into a handbag, which she also took off the shelf. She was stopped and security found women’s clothing, a pair of headphones along with the handbag. Police arrived and checked her record and found that she had two outstanding warrants.

Watertown Police Warn of Utility Scam in Town

The Watertown Police Department warns residents to be aware of a scam involving someone posing a representative from a utility. The Watertown Police posted the following announcement on its Facebook page:

WPD received a complaint regarding a “utility company” impostor scam. As always, make sure to verify the credentials of the individual before giving out any financial or personal information. Your utility bill and the internet are good reference points. Scammers request payment through gift cards and Western Union.
