Watertown Community Foundation Interns Gain Valuable Experience

How do high schoolers get that critical first work experience? Last summer, the Watertown Community Foundation (WCF) and the Watertown High School Guidance Department piloted an internship program for local teens. For meaningful summer work experience at a business or organization of their choice, students earned a modest stipend. Watertown Insurance Agency Hopes for Record Toys for Tots Haul

During this holiday season, the joy of giving and receiving gifts is what drives the cheer and community of Watertown, but not everyone is so fortunate. That is why Toys for Tots was created, which has been able to distribute over 469 million toys to children thanks to the help of kindhearted people all over the country. Every year, H & K Insurance Agency, Inc., in Watertown, has participated in a local Toys for Tots drive. Last year was its best toy-raising year to date, almost doubling the previous year’s donation, and with help from the community H & K hopes to increase it yet again, H & K announced. That is where the local community comes in.

Watertown Field Hockey Blows Past Hanover to Reach State Final

Led by two goals from senior co-captain Ally McCall, the Watertown field hockey team is headed back to Worcester for an eighth straight state final after beating Hanover Tuesday night. The Raiders (21-0) struggled to find the back of the net in the first half of the state semifinal played on a frigid night at Canton High School. Hanover came in undefeated at 19-0-3 and posed a tough opponent, said Watertown Head Coach Eileen Donahue. “This was a tough game. it was a very physical type of game,” Donahue said.

UPDATED: Celebration Planned for Debut of New Multi-Fitness Trainer at Moxley Field

Watertown will soon have a modern multi-fitness trainer at Moxley Field, and a celebration is planned for the debut, featuring area college athletes. When the new equipment is delivered, a ribbon cutting and demonstration of the new Multi Fitness Stair Trainer will be held. The equipment was purchased with funds from a federal grant the Watertown Public Schools received called the Carol White Physical Education Program Grant, or PEP Grant. The program created by the Watertown Public School using the grant is called “Wellness the Watertown Way.” Director of Wellness & Extended Services Donna Ruseckas said the equipment has a stair climbing element, so instead of having to go back down on the stairs, which reduces strain on knees and other joints, they can use a slide.

Pedestrian Bridge Over Charles River Will be Replaced

The pedestrian bridge over the Charles River west of Watertown Square will be replaced by the Department of Conservation and Recreation. The bridge will be completely replaced so it will be accessible by people with disabilities, said Dan Driscoll, DCR’s Director of Recreation Facilities Planning and Design. “The current bridge does not meet ADA requirements,” Driscoll said. The new bridge will be a prefabricated one, but for a short time there will be no pedestrian access at that point in the river, Driscoll said. The project will be bid this fall, and work will be done in the spring of 2016, he said.

Tree Lighting Ceremony to be Held in Watertown Square

The annual Watertown Tree Lighting Ceremony will be hosted by the Watertown-Belmont Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Watertown on Dec. 4. The public is invited to the free event on the Watertown Square Delta on Friday, Dec. 4. Santa Claus will arrive at 5:15 p.m. riding a Watertown Fire truck.

Historical Society Hosts Film ‘The Legacy of a Lost Armenian Community’

A film about the a small town in Turkey, from ancient times through the Armenian Genocide, will be presented by the Historical Society of Watertown at the Watertown Free Public Library. Memories of Marash: The Legacy of a Lost Armenian Community, a documentary film by Roger Hagopian, will be shown on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2015 at 2 p.m. It will be hosted by the Historical Society of Watertown at the Watertown Savings Bank Meeting Room in the Watertown Free Public Library, 123 Main Street, Watertown. The Historical Society sent out the following announcement:

This 68-minute documentary film presentation on the 100th year commemoration of the Armenian Genocide was originally created in 2002. Producer Roger Hagopian remastered the film in 2015 to widescreen format with high resolution photography, hundreds of new high resolution images and animated maps.
