Gore Place Hosting Used Book Sale This Weekend

Annual Gently Used Book Sale – Saturday and Sunday, March 25 and 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

During this sale, book lovers can buy gently-used books at bargain prices ($1 for most paperbacks, $2 for most hardcovers) Interested in donating? Gore Place is accepting donated books from March 10 to March 24! To arrange a drop-off time, please email events@goreplace.org. No CDs or DVDs, please. Two Watertown Residents Running Marathon on Dana-Farber Team

On April 17, the following Watertown residents are running to defy cancer as a member of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team in the 127th Boston Marathon®:

Along with more than 500 Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge teammates from across the United States and around the world, they will run Massachusetts’ historic marathon route from Hopkinton to Boston to collectively raise $6.5 million for cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. This year marks the 34th annual running of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge (DFMC). One hundred percent of the money raised by the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team benefits Dana-Farber’s Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research, which supports promising science research in its earliest stages. The Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge has raised more than $115 million for the Barr Program to date. In 1990, Dana-Farber was among the first charity organizations to be recognized by the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A), which organizes the Boston Marathon.

WCA-TV is hosting another Community Production Day on Friday, April 14th from 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. for all non-profit organizations in Watertown! As always, the staff here at WCA-TV will work with you to produce a video announcement free of charge but this time you will also get the chance to collaborate with other community members in the studio! All videos can be up to 90 seconds in length and will be shown across all WCA-TV channels. All we ask is that you come in prepared, and ready with an idea! Content produced on Community Production Day will also be uploaded to our video on demand service so you can share it on your organization’s social media, website, and online outreach efforts!

The Office of Senator Will Brownsberger is accepting applications for part-time, unpaid, internships for the summer of 2023. There are two types of opportunities available – general office internships and legislative internships. All applications are due Monday, April 10, 2023. General Office Internships are designed for applicants in the beginning stages of exploring policy-making and government, seeking opportunities to learn more and refine their interests. Legislative Internships are designed for those who have already gained some experience, either professionally or academically, and are looking to delve deeper into a topic of interest.

Attendees of Tree Seminar Learned How Choose the Right Species for Their Homes

On March 11th, Watertown residents gathered at the Watertown Free Public Library and on Zoom to hear from tree care experts at “The Right Tree for Me”, a free seminar sponsored by Trees for Watertown. The event featured four expert presenters speaking on different aspects of tree selection and care, followed by a lively panel discussion as the speakers proposed tree solutions for real world Watertown conditions. 

Following an introduction by TFW president Libby Shaw, Massachusetts Certified Arborist Greg Mosman of Barrett Tree Service East tackled the issue of tree affordability. He explained that the cost of planting a tree can vary depending on the size of the tree and how rare it is, but that small, bare-root trees can be purchased by mail order quite inexpensively and are easy to plant. An important caveat is that bare-root tree survival depends on the roots not drying out, so these should be planted right away after delivery. The audience at the Watertown Library listen to the “Right Tree for Me” panel at the recent event.
