Watertown Ballet School Wins Awards at Prestigious Competition

The following announcement was provided by Koltun Ballet Boston:

More than two dozen young Massachusetts dancers, most from the Greater Boston area, comprise a team from Koltun Ballet Boston (KBB) that won several Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) awards and accolades last month including the Outstanding School Award. This is the fourth time in five years the Watertown-based organization has been recognized as the region’s top school. The regional leg of this ongoing international competition was held last month in Worcester. Two KBB ensembles that participated last month have been invited to the YAGP Finals in Tampa, Florida from April 3-9, 2023.

City Hosting $20 Mattress and Box Spring Collection at Recycling Event

The City of Watertown sent out the following information:

Watertown is offering $20 mattress and box spring collection at the Recycling Event on Saturday, March 25, 2023. The event will be held at 57 Stanley Ave in Watertown from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

There is a limit of 2 units per household (a unit is either a mattress or box spring). Residents can pay with cash or with credit card at the event, payable to HandUp Mattress, the vendor that will be collecting the units. This recycling option will only be available until the truck is full, so if you would like to bring a mattress/box-spring, please consider coming early! City Deploying Rodent Control in Areas of Big Road Construction Projects

The City of Watertown, MA has begun using Anticimex SMART technology, provided through Modern Pest Services, a licensed pest control company. The SMART City concept is an intelligent, non-toxic, always-on solution for pest control, and was developed to provide municipalities and community organizations access to a comprehensive solution to rodent control. The City of Watertown, in partnership with Modern Pest Services, is conducting site evaluations and has deployed SMART equipment in tactical areas of the city to identify, monitor, and control rodent “hot spots” to reduce rodent pressure throughout the city. Modern Pest has begun rolling out strategic deployment of above-ground SMART boxes, which monitor and control rodent activity while providing real-time data for proactive pest control in the community. These Smart Boxes have been initially deployed on Mt.

The Watertown Department of Public Works (DPW) is now accepting applications for the following positions for the 2023 summer season. This includes immediate employment as a full-time seasonal (Mon.–Fri. 40 hours/week) member of the department. Applicants must be entering the 9th grade (Fall 2023) or older to be considered. Positions are available in the Parks, Cemetery and Water Divisions.

The lives of our Watertown notables were recalled by members of the Historical Society Council and Historical Society volunteers.

Small Saves Mentors a New Goalie in This Week’s Cartoon

James DeMarco grew up in Watertown and became a goaltender at age 5. It’s his life’s passion to stand between the pipes and keep the puck out of the net. Combining this with the love of cartooning Small Saves emerged in 1991 and took on a life of his own. “To play goal–then come home and draw Small Saves — is my ideal definition of a good day.”
