Board Presidents Remembered as Part of Watertown Boys & Girls Club 50th Anniversary

As the Watertown Boys & Girls Club (WBGC) approaches its 50th anniversary Gala celebration on October 28, 2022, the list of those who have contributed to the Club’s success is long. As part of the celebration, the last two executive directors Renee Gaudette and Allen Gallagher, who shepherded the Club for more than 30 years consecutively, recollected some of those who helped make the Club such a welcome resource for the children and teens of Watertown. The list includes folks who guided the kids every day, who have donated their time, talent, and treasure, and even some of the notable Club kids. The list of contributors extends far beyond those on this list, but in the spirit of this golden milestone, here’s 50 for 50, a by-no-means comprehensive and in-no-particular-order list of those who come to mind for Gaudette and Gallagher. “We have been so fortunate to work with such amazing individuals.

City Manager Hosting Meet & Greet for West Side Residents

City Manager George Proakis will be having a Meet & Greet for residents of District D. This will be taking place on Thursday, Nov. 3 from 6-8 p.m. in the Watertown Police Station Community Room.  

This will be a great opportunity to meet our new Manager and introduce yourself, as well as discuss any questions or concerns for the West End of Watertown! Hope to see you there!

Winter Clothing Drive & Store to be Hosted by Watertown Mutual Aid

The next Watertown Mutual Aid Network’s Winter Donation Drive & Free Store is on Sunday, Nov. 6 at Ballroom in Boston at 100 Parker St. in Watertown, MA. We will be receiving donations of winter coats, winter clothes for kids, and personal care items from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and people can “shop” for free 1-2:30 p.m.

LETTER: Watertown Biosafety Committee Consultant Addresses Questions

Thank you for your letter and questions regarding the Watertown Biosafety Committee (WBSC). I consult for the Watertown Board of Health/WBSC, serve as the designee by the director of Public Health and would like to clarify some of the points you raised and answer your questions. The Biotechnology regulations were enacted to protect Watertown residents by mandating companies performing specific types of work to meet certain requirements. These regulations were developed based on regulations from surrounding communities, but in some aspects are stricter than some of our neighboring communities. For example, Watertown requires a permit for companies performing most work under Biosafety level 2 (BSL2) regardless of whether the work involves synthetic or recombinant DNA (rDNA) which is not true of all municipalities in the greater Boston area.

Viola M. Corbin of Watertown, passed away on October 23, 2022, at the age of 82. She was the beloved daughter of the late J. Fred & Eileen M. (Quill) Corbin. Loving sister of Patricia M. Davis & her husband Kenneth of Watertown and the late Geraldine A. Corbin. Dear aunt of Seana M. Barrett & her husband Jay, Kim Bellitti & her husband Carl, and the late James R. Davis. Caring great-aunt of Christian Barrett, and Mia & Hanna Bellitti.

Miller/Tracy Children’s Foundation Hosting Shopping Bonanza Fundraiser

The Miller/Tracy Children’s Foundation will host the 2022 Annual Shopping Bonanza on Sunday, Nov. 6 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Watertown Sons of Italy hall, 520 Pleasant St., in Watertown. The Foundation provided the following information:

This is our 17th time running the fundraiser, and this year will be our first time hosting the event since COVID to it is bigger and better than ever! 

We have so many new vendors (full list will be below), a bake sale, and wonderful raffle items. 

Money raised from the event goes towards our outreach programs, including our Back to School program which supplies personalized requests for school supplies, clothes, shoes and backpacks to 200+ children each year in the Greater Boston area.

Gore Place Hosting Frightful Fridays This Week

Our popular Halloween season program Frightful Fridays returns in October! Enjoy spooky tales, but nothing too scary! The 45-minute program, which features five stories, occurs twice per evening at 6:30 p.m. and again at 7:45 p.m. (next date is Oct. 28). Capacity is 60 people per session.

OP-ED: Residents First Watertown Biosafety Committee Leaves Her With Questions

I noticed that the Biosafety Committee was meeting on October 6th and decided to “zoom in,” curious to know what it was all about. Besides the many buildings being erected all over the City, this seemed like it would be the next step: how does the City vet our new corporate neighbors? This seemed like the place to find this out. On the agenda were three companies:

Arcaea, LLC (155 Arlington Street), which works on cosmetics

AutoIVF, Inc (200 Dexter Ave.). which, obviously is in the IVF business

Abata Therapeutics (100 Forge Road…Arsenal Yards), which was working on diabetes 1 and multiple sclerosis.
