MassBay Community College Hosting Virtual STEM Expo

The following announcement was provided by MassBay Community College:

MassBay Community College will hold its biannual Student STEM Expo virtually from May 9 – 13, 2022. This event enables students in engineering, math, computer science, life sciences, and biotechnology programs to showcase their work to the MassBay community, local STEM professionals, and the general public. The Student STEM Expo highlights MassBay students’ creativity and ingenuity through the projects they have completed during the spring semester. Online visitors can watch prerecorded videos from individual students and student teams to learn about the research and processes that went into the creation of their work. The virtual platform allows viewers to leave comments and ask questions.

Watertown Health Department Running COVID Booster Clinic

The Watertown Health Department announced it will be hosting a Moderna Booster Clinic on May 10, 2022 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Watertown Public Library, First floor; Watertown Savings Bank Meeting Room, 123 Main St., Watertown, MA 02472

The CDC recommends everyone ages 12 years and older receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster after completing their primary COVID-19 vaccination series. Some people can receive two boosters. You can mix and match vaccines. Your booster does not need to be the same vaccine brand as your original COVID-19 vaccination.

Local Restaurants Delivering Meals to Community Fridge as Part of Nourishing Program

Watertown Community FridgeThe Watertown Community Fridge is being filled with meals from Watertown restaurants participating in the Charles River Regional Chamber’s Nourishing program. It is located near the church at 80 Mt. Auburn St. The following information was provided by the Charles River Regional Chamber:

Over the past two years our chamber’s food assistance program has purchased more than 15,000 meals from independent restaurants in Newton, Wellesley and Needham and delivered them to families and individuals in need. This morning we’re making our first meal deliveries in Watertown as we expand our Nourishing program yet again.

A Replacement Goalie in This Week’s Small Saves Cartoon

James DeMarco grew up in Watertown and became a goaltender at age 5. It’s his life’s passion to stand between the pipes and keep the puck out of the net. Combining this with the love of cartooning Small Saves emerged in 1991 and took on a life of his own. “To play goal–then come home and draw Small Saves — is my ideal definition of a good day.”

Watertown Receives Grant to do Inventory of Trees on Public Land

These trees along the Community Path between Whites Avenue and Waverley Avenue are some that would be counted in the Urban Tree Inventory to be conducted by the City of Watertown. The following announcement was provided by the City of Watertown:

The City of Watertown was recently awarded a $38,500 grant with a 50/50 match by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s (DCR) Urban and Community Forestry Challenge Grant Program to support the City’s Tree and Potential Planting Location Inventory project. The grant is awarded annually to municipalities and nonprofits looking to improve and protect urban forests in an effort to help communities inventory, plant and maintain public trees. The City of Watertown will be contracting with PlanIT Geo, Inc. to conduct an Urban Tree Inventory. This project will provide a public tree inventory on streets, parks, and public property throughout the City.

Watertown Church Looking to Fill Part-Time Position

Charlie BreitroseFirst Parish Church of Watertown. First Parish of Watertown Unitarian Universalist sent out the following announcement about an opening for a part-time job. The church seeks a reliable, conscientious Sexton for 12 hours/week position at the church. The sexton is responsible for the cleaning, maintenance, and oversight of the overall condition and appearance of the church building and its grounds. The Sexton’s primary supervisor is the Minister, and the role works in conjunction with the Building and Grounds Committee. Applicants must be able to work independently with limited day-to-day guidance and have strong organizational skills.

Sweet Treat Raising Proceeds for Ukrainian Relief at Watertown Restaurant

City Works in Watertown is serving Syrnyk, a Ukrainian cheesecake, to raise money for World Central Kitchen. The following announcement was provide by City Works:

To support relief efforts in Ukraine, City Works Eatery & Pour House, located in Arsenal Yards, will offer guests Syrnyk, a sweet and rich Ukrainian cheesecake, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting World Central Kitchen (WCK). The cultural dessert staple will be offered beginning May 4. The support for WCK comes at a time when an affiliated relief kitchen came under fire in Kharkiv just last week. Currently, WCK with their local partners prepare about 320,000 meals per day to feed people in Ukraine.

Mosesian Center Honoring Photographer, Local Artist at 2022 Benefit

The Mosesian Center for the Arts will hold its annual fundraiser on Tuesday, May 17. “After having to cancel 2020’s benefit and stream last year’s event online, we’re thrilled to be holding the 2022 Annual Benefit & Mosesian Awards in person again,” said Executive Director Darren Farrington. Mosesian Award recipients for 2022 are Rania Matar and Dawn Evans Scaltreto. Matar is a Boston-based, Lebanese-born, award-winning photographer whose work has been widely exhibited in museums worldwide.
