Applicants Sought for Watertown Town Boards & Committees

The following information was provided by the Town Manager’s office:

Town Manager Michael J. Driscoll is seeking Watertown citizens interested in serving on the following Town Boards, Commissions and Committees with appointment dates in February 2021 in accordance with Ordinance # 2007-46, an Ordinance on the Timing and Process of Appointments to Town Boards, Commissions and Committees. Interested applicants should submit a letter of interest accompanied by a resume or other information concerning background or experience by email to townmgr@watertownma.gov or Town Manager’s Office, 149 Main Street, Watertown, Massachusetts 02472. Board/Commission: Board of HealthVacancy/Term: One Member, Three Year Term. Description: Provide for fulfillment of its duties under M.G.L. 111:5, 26-33 and other sections including enforcement of the state Sanitary and Environmental Codes, reporting diseases dangerous to the public health, and enforcement of other applicable state and local laws and regulations. The Board of Health determines the health needs of the community (and the health services available to the community) in terms of the size and characteristics of the population, specific health problems, and environmental conditions.

LETTER: Lowell PTO Members Urge Watertown Schools to Move to In-Person Learning

Lowell School in Watertown. Dear Dr. Galdston and Members of the Watertown School Committee,

As members of the J.R. Lowell School Parent Teacher Organization and the Cunniff School Parent Teacher Organization many of us have spent years volunteering our time to enrich the educational experience of Watertown Public School children. In March of 2020 we found ourselves in an unprecedented time and the unthinkable happened, all in person learning was suspended. Now, nearly a full year later, we are sincerely grateful for the many steps the school district has taken to keep our children and teachers safe. The thoughtful approach to return to the classroom, COVID testing for teachers and pooled COVID testing for students has in fact proven to keep our children safe.

Watertown Cable Offering Remote Workshops

The following announcement was provided by Watertown Cable:

WCA-TV will be offering remote workshops from March to May. Workshops will be available in two formats: Live webinar and Q&A. For the live webinar format, a WCA-TV instructor will teach a two hour workshop via Zoom. The deadline to sign up for these workshops is the Friday prior to the scheduled Zoom webinar (with the exception of holidays). For the Q&A format, attendees will be sent an instructional video to watch in preparation for in-person training and a one hour Q&A session via Zoom that will take place at a later date. The deadline to sign up for these workshops will be a few days prior to the in-person training sessions.

James DeMarco grew up in Watertown and became a goaltender at age 5. It’s his life’s passion to stand between the pipes and keep the puck out of the net. Combining this with the love of cartooning Small Saves emerged in 1991 and took on a life of his own. “To play goal–then come home and draw Small Saves — is my ideal definition of a good day.”

Board of Health Member Named Fellow of National Group, Also Vice Chair of EPA Board

Dr. Barbara Beck. The following announcement was provided by the Watertown Health Department:

Dr. Barbara Beck, Watertown Board of Health Member was recently named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Election as an AAAS Fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers. 

Dr. Beck was elected as an AAAS Fellow for “For meritorious contributions to the fields of toxicology and risk assessment, particularly for pioneering work on the evaluation of health risks of environmental chemicals.” Additionally, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced her appointment to serve as Vice-Chair of the Science Advisory Board (SAB). Dr. Beck will continue her service as a Watertown Board of Health Member throughout her term as Vice-Chair of the SAB.

COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic for Watertown Residents Age 65+ Planned

UPDATE: All the appointments for this vaccine clinic have been filled. The Watertown Health Department announced that it will host a COVID-19 vaccine clinic for Watertown seniors age 65 and older. The Watertown Health Department has been allotted 100 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, per State requirements. 

A First-Shot clinic will be held for Watertown residents 65 and older ONLY (no caregivers) on Monday, March 1, 2021 from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM, Community Room, Watertown Police Department, 552 Main Street. An appointment is required to get a vaccine. No walk-ins. Registration for the clinic can be done by following this link: https://www.maimmunizations.org/reg/5161005892
