Conservation Commission Announces Winner of Faire on the Square Contest

The Watertown Conservation Commission would like to thank all who stopped by at our table to discuss the benefits of open space and our wetland resources. Thank you as well for those that participated in the True/False contest and for those who filled out our questionnaire regarding what residents think we should focus on besides are wetlands protection. Five entrants answered all of the True/False questions correctly. They are: Maxine Barrios, Kate Coyne, Michael Schade, Dave Harrison, and Peter DelTredici.

OP-ED: Improving Rail Service Can Reduce Congestion at Rush Hour

A closer look at recently-reported traffic numbers offers hope that expansions of rail service can make a real difference in rush hour congestion. I was discouraged by two analyses that came out over the summer. MassDOT’s report, Congestion in the Commonwealth, showed that daily vehicle volume dwarfs daily commuter rail ridership along the major radial commuting paths into the core of the Boston area. Around the same time, preliminary results from the Rail Vision model showed that even major expansions of commuter rail service outside 128 would garner ridership increases apparently too small to make a dent in vehicle volume. For example, the Congestion report shows at page 89 that on I-90 (the Massachusetts Turnpike), there are roughly 150,000 vehicles per day as compared to only 18,000 daily riders on the parallel Worcester line.

Construction at Watertown Library to Impact One Entrance

Watertown Free Public Library

The Watertown Free Public Library announced that the rear entrance will be closed for several weeks due to a construction project. The Library provided the following announcement:

Beginning Tuesday, October 15 the rear entrance of the Watertown Free Public Library will be under construction. The library will remain open regular hours for the duration of the project, but the parking lot entrance will be closed for an estimated six weeks. During that time, patrons can enter the side door on Thaxter Street between the library and Town Hall, or use the Main St. entrance.

South End Restaurant Opening New Location in Watertown

The Gallows and the developers of Arsenal Yards announced that the South End eatery will be opening a new location in the remodeled Arsenal Mall in Watertown. Diners can enjoy modern American cuisine with a French flair in the new location at Arsenal Yards, which will feature a patio dining area. The Gallows is part of a group of restaurants and eateries, that also includes Blackbird Doughnuts, Banyan and Sally’s Sandwiches. The following announcement was provided by Boylston Properties:

Boylston Properties and Wilder proudly announced today that The Gallows restaurant, which has been a popular South End favorite since 2010, will open its second location in Watertown’s Arsenal Yards neighborhood. The 4,000-square-foot space will be The Gallows’ very first hybrid restaurant featuring cult-favorite doughnuts from Blackbird Doughnuts, new food and beverage concepts, and outdoor dining on its patio overlooking Arsenal Park on the Charles River.

Classical Concert at Plumbing Museum Features Flute Duo

The Plumbing Museum is pleased to continue its classical music concert series “Music of the Pipes” that was formed last year by an acclaimed Polish flutist Antonina Styczen. Conceived as a community outreach project, the concert series brings together a variety of musical genres to provide family-friendly, educational, traditional and experimental music programming. For its second concert, Styczen is joining the forces with Katy Wherry, one of the best American flutist of the young generation and the founder of the biggest flute online community – Etude of the Week. This vibrant flute duo has been bringing joy and diversity of music onto stages with its #flutever project that began in Spring 2019 when two young women decided to create an ensemble where they can express their creativity together and share it with audiences all over the world. We are thrilled to provide the stage for this special duet and bring great, free music programming to the Watertown community.

Upstage Lung Cancer Presenting Musical Tribute to Disney in Watertown

Kicking off its 11th year utilizing the performing arts to raise awareness in the fight against lung cancer, Upstage Lung Cancer (ULC) presents a one-night-only cabaret concert, A Musical Tribute To Walt Disney: When you Wish Upon A Star, on Tuesday, October 29, 7:30 pm at the Mosesian Center for the Arts, 321 Arsenal Street, Watertown.  The event is open to the public, a pre-concert silent auction begins at 6 pm. Presented in partnership with the LUNGevity Foundation, all proceeds from the performance support the cause of early lung cancer detection research. 

A high-spirited evening of music making and storytelling, A Musical Tribute to Walt Disney honors the imaginative genius who brought all of the joys and fantasies of childhood to life. In 1966, at the age of 65, Walt Disney died of lung cancer. In that year and the many that have followed, millions have watched a Disney movie or the Walt Disney television show, visited Disneyland or Walt Disney World and have brought this icon’s life work into their homes. Few creative individuals have made such a long-lasting and indelible mark on American life and culture.

James DeMarco grew up in Watertown and became a goaltender at age 5. It’s his life’s passion to stand between the pipes and keep the puck out of the net. Combining this with the love of cartooning, Small Saves emerged in 1991 and took on a life of his own. “To play goal–then come home and draw Small Saves — is my ideal definition of a good day.”
