Watertown Student Graduates from Worcester Academy, Achieves Honors

Worcester Academy held its 183rd Commencement Exercises June 2 with 135 seniors graduating, the school announced. Among the graduates was Roman Davis of Watertown. He was recognized on the First Semester Honor Roll and Headmaster’s list for 2016-2017. Davis also played on Worcester Academy’s Varsity Boys Soccer Team which enjoyed a successful Fall 2016 season finishing with 19 wins and two losses. The team made it to the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class A Finals and won the Academy’s first regular season WNEPSSA title in a prep league that includes Choate, Loomis, Phillips Andover, Phillips Exeter, Hotchkiss, Northfield Mount Hermon, among others.

Boys & Girls Club Macy’s Fundraiser, Get Your Tickets for the Club’s Golf Tourney

Watertown Boys & Girls Club announced it is participating in the Macy’s Shop for a Cause Charity Challenge. This friendly competition has non-profit organizations go head to head to see who can raise the most money for their cause. The organization with the most dollars raised at the end of the competition (August 9) wins the grand prize of $100,000 from Macy’s, with runner-ups receiving large prizes as well. There are also added incentives throughout the competition encouraging organizations to meet weekly goals to earn cash prizes. Watertown Boys & Girls Club’s goal is to raise $2,500 during the challenge.

Hatch Maker Space Moving to New Home, Welcomes New Coordinator

On Thursday, July 27 Hatch will close its doors at the Arsenal Yards for the last time and prepare to make a move to its new home at The Residence at Watertown Square on 20 Summer St., Watertown Free Public Library officials announced. Located in the Arsenal Yards, Hatch has operated out of a retail space leased to them free of charge for the past three years. Of the time there, Assistant Library Director Caitlin Browne said, “We have been so grateful for the generosity Wilder Properties has extended to us. The fact that we have been able to run Hatch with almost no overhead means that the majority of our resources are going right to the community and we’ve kept Hatch a free space to users with few exceptions. We can’t thank the staff of the Arsenal Yards enough for all of the help they’ve given us over the past three years, especially General Manager Allyson Reed and Facilities Manager Ruben Olivo.”

Similar to the arrangement with the Arsenal Yards, the Residence at Watertown Square will also offer Hatch a retail space rent free.

OBIT: Victoria Brezoska, 96, Worked for Raytheon, Loved the Senior Center

A Funeral Mass for Victoria Elizabeth Brezoska will be celebrated on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. in the Church of Saint Patrick, Watertown. Miss Brezoska passed away in the Golden Pond Nursing Center, Hopkinton on Sunday evening, July 16, 2017 after a long period of declining health. She was 96. A graduate of Newton High School, class of 1938. She also received a degree at the Florence Utt School of Key Punching.

OBIT: Donald E. Kelley Sr., 81, Army Veteran, Master Pipefitter

A prayer service for Donald E. Kelley, Sr. will be celebrated on the Thursday evening at 6 p.m. in the MacDonald Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home, Watertown. Mr. Kelley, a son of the late Charles E. Kelley and Genevieve A. (Fordan) Kelley passed away on Friday July 14, 2017 in St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua, New Hampshire. Donald was 81. Donald was born Newton, MA and raised in Watertown.

Town Holding Community Discussion on Airplane Noise Over Watertown

Watertown residents will have their chance to be heard about noise from airplanes heading to and from Logan Airport at a community meeting.

Tonight’s Watertown Summer Concert Will be Moved to the Library

Tonight’s Summer Concert will be held in the Watertown Savings Bank Meeting Room at the Watertown Free Public Library, 123 Main Street at 6:30 p.m., Town officials announced. Playing on Thursday, July 13 is Fellswater, a dynamic instrumental Celtic music ensemble playing a wide range of music from traditional to modern compositions, drawing from the music of Scotland, Ireland, Brittany and Canada. Snow cones, popcorn and water will be served free of charge.

Free Workshop Offered to Residents on Kingian Nonviolent Conflict Reconciliation

The Watertown Kingian Nonviolence Coordinating Committee announced a new community training course on “Kingian Nonviolent Conflict Reconciliation.”

The 16-hour course will be held on two Saturdays, August 19 and 26, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., in the Community Room of the Watertown Police Department, 552 Main Street. The course is co-sponsored by World in Watertown with support from the Watertown Police Department, and has been made possible by a significant grant from the Watertown Community Foundation. The Kingian Nonviolence Coordinating Committee is excited to share this fun and interactive curriculum with the community. It was co-authored by Dr. Bernard LaFayette and David Jehnsen to teach how Dr. Martin Luther King’s philosophy and methodology can be applied to present-day conflicts, both personal and societal. The course will be taught by youth and faculty trainers from the Watertown Public Schools, as well as officers from the Watertown Police Department.
