Watertown Group Participating in Mother’s Day Walk for Peace

On Sunday, May 14, Watertown residents will join together as “Watertown Walks for Peace” in the annual Mothers Day Walk for Peace in Dorchester. This event raises awareness and funds for the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, a center of healing and teaching for families and communities affected by gun violence. Watertown Walks for Peace will participate for the third year in a row, and has set a fundraising goal of $3,000 to support the programs and services of the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute. The Institute was created 20 years ago by the mother of Louis Brown, who was killed in 1993 on his way to an after-school Christmas Party for Teens against Gang Violence. Since its founding, the Institute has provided support to survivors of homicide victims and has modeled peace education.

2 Sisters Will Talk About Their Journey Through Mental Illness

During the month of May, communities across the country are bringing awareness to mental health. The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports 1 in 5 Americans will be affected by a mental health condition in their lifetime and every American is affected or impacted through their friends and family and can do something to help others. Wayside Youth & Family Support Network announced it will join the Department of Mental Health to present “How We Got Through,” a conversation between sisters about mental illness and recovery. Meg Hutchinson and her sister, Tess Adams, will engage in a conversation about their remarkable sibling’s journey of survival and recovery through the years since Meg’s Bipolar 1 Disorder diagnosis. Meg Hutchinson is an award-winning songwriter, poet, and recording artist on Red House Records and has toured widely in North America and Europe.

Find Out About the Proposed State Budget from State Sen. Brownsberger

On Wednesday, May 10, Senator Will Brownsberger will host a discussion on the Fiscal Year 2018 state budget, in advance of the Senate’s consideration of the budget, which is scheduled to begin on May 22. The meeting will begin with an overview of the budget before providing community members the opportunity to ask questions, voice concerns, and express priorities. WHEN: Wednesday, May 10 from 6:30-8 p.m.

Local Artist, Author Hosted Lecture on Popeye, Will Doodle for Free Comic Day

Local writer, cartoonist and cable show host Fred M. Grandinetti, hosted a lecture on the history of Popeye at I AM Books on April 29, 2017. 

In Italy the sailor man is known as Braccio Di Ferro and appeared in hundreds of comic books produced specifically for the Italian marketplace. I AM Books has Italian comic books featuring Braccio Di Ferro and his crew available for purchase. Grandinetti showed a special episode of his award winning cable access series Drawing With Fred.  The program featured Popeye cartoons in Italian. Nicola Orichuia, co-owner of I AM Books, became an animated cartoon character during the broadcast.

Yoga Studio Joining Project: OM, a National Effort to Battle Breast Cancer

Artemis Yoga in Watertown is participating in projectOM, a yoga class of one million to battle breast cancer. Liz Padula, owner of Artemis Yoga, sent out the following information:

We all know that positive, powerful change needs to start from the ground up and in this case from the yoga mat up. So we were thrilled to team up with Manduka, the industry’s most trusted yoga brand, to be a part of the world’s largest yoga class of one million bodies strong to benefit Susan G. Komen. As part of this effort, we share the collective goal to do great things – for our bodies, for the bodies of others and for the world. So we are inviting the community to be part of something epic and we are offering four donation-based classes on May 12 & 13 as follows:

Watertown Savings Announces New Location, New Corporator at Anual Meeting

The 147th annual meeting of the Watertown Savings Bank (WSB) was held recently at the Boston Marriott Hotel in Newton. Before the gathering of bank officers, managers, trustees, and corporators, Bank President Brett Dean talked about 2016 results and events, and plans for 2017. Dean reported that in 2016, WSB saw continued deposit and loan growth. As of December 31, 2016, total assets for the bank were $1.1 billion. He noted that WSB will continue its commitment to customer service and community banking.
