Local author Elijah Wald will speak about his latest book “Dylan Goes Electric! Newport, Seeger, Dylan, and the Night that Split the Sixties,” the Watertown Free Public Library announced. Mr. Wald’s writing has challenged fans of some music icons with previous books like ‘How the Beatles Destroyed Rock’n’Roll: An Alternative History of American Popular Music’ and ‘Escaping the Delta: Robert Johnson and the Invention of the Blues.’

Walk for Food Allergy Begins and Ends at Arsenal Park in Watertown

Boston FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education) is pleased to announce this year’s annual walk will feature a wooden 20 foot by 8 foot wall of pumpkins that walk participants will help paint teal. The walk begins at 1 p.m. starting at Arsenal Park with activities for all ages and will end at 4 p.m. The giant wall of pumpkins will also be located at the center of Arsenal Park and walkers are encouraged to begin painting it teal as soon as the walk begins. FARE has walks all over the county, but Boston is the only walk featuring this teal wall of pumpkins and one of the largest expected attendances between 500-700 walkers. The Teal Pumpkin Project is dedicated to allowing all children to experience the joy and tradition of trick-or-treating on Halloween by displaying a teal pumpkin to signal there is an alternative to candy or this is a safe house for children with allergies. It is 43 days to Election Day, Nov. 8th. The local referendum, Question 5, regarding the Community Preservation Act is on the ballot again. Vote YES and your taxes will be raised through a 2 percent tax surcharge on your annual property tax assessment for at least five years and possibly beyond. The monies will go to support only three special interests: (1) open space/recreation, (2) historic preservation, and (3) affordable housing.

Watertown Citizens Group Discussed the Black Lives Matter Movement

On Wednesday, Sept. 21, a group of 25 concerned residents of Watertown and Waltham attended a public meeting hosted by Watertown Citizens for Peace, Justice and the Environment at the Watertown Free Public Library, for a discussion of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement (more recently renamed Movement for Black Lives), the group announced. The killing of black men and women by police officers, the killing of police officers, and the trials and court decisions surrounding the actions of the police are much on people’s minds. Attendees were invited to reflect on the meaning of this movement for them, and whether or not the movement has changed their view of the police or the justice system. People described being disturbed by the shootings as well as the lack of accountability of the police departments in several cities.

Find Out About the Arsenal Street Corridor Study at a Meeting Hosted by MassDOT

Please join the Massachusetts Department of Transportation for a public information meeting on the Arsenal Street Corridor Study, state officials announced. The meeting will be held Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016, from 6-8 p.m. at the Watertown Middle School, Auditorium & Cafeteria, 68 Waverley Ave., Watertown. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is studying the Arsenal Street Corridor in Watertown. This study will develop and analyze alternatives that are intended to improve transportation conditions on Arsenal Street between Galen Street and Birmingham Parkway.

20th Annual Healing Garden Music Fest Benefits Mount Auburn Hospital

Mount Auburn Hospital, along with Terry Eagan and Patio Records, are pleased to be presenting the 20th Annual Healing Garden Music Fest on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Regent Theatre in Arlington, the hospital announced. The concert will feature country, folk, and traditional music performances by Rick Fines, Barbara Kessler, Garnet Rogers, Suzie Vinnick, and featured guests Richard Gates, Matt Leavenworth, Dave Mattacks, and Scott Neubert. 100 percent of the concert’s proceeds will go towards funding a future healing garden at Mount Auburn Hospital. Terry Eagan, a longtime Waltham resident and friend of Mount Auburn Hospital, began these festivals 19 years ago to raise funds to fulfill his wife Mary Eagan’s dream of having a healing garden built for patients suffering from cancer.
