Watertown Woman Joins Mount Auburn Hospital’s First Ever Marathon Team

This April, Mount Auburn Hospital’s first-ever Boston Marathon team will be completing the world-famous race in support of the Hoffman Breast Center, including a woman from Watertown, the hospital announced. Thanks to a generous donation of three invitational entries from Chris Connolly, General Manager of Herb Connolly Acura of Framingham, the following Mount Auburn employees have been given the chance to fulfill personal dreams and raise money for the hospital:

Kathleen Forde, Director of Health Information Management who lives in Watertown, will be trading in her long-time spectator status in order to complete her first Boston Marathon. Kathleen will be running to support her coworkers “who live the mission of Mount Auburn.”
Melissa Brangwynne is a nurse at Mount Auburn who made it a personal goal to complete the marathon before her upcoming 30th birthday. In addition to supporting the hospital, Melissa will be running to honor a late friend and soccer teammate who survived the 2013 marathon bombing but unexpectedly passed away earlier this year. Phoebe Matthews is a nurse in Mount Auburn’s operating rooms who, despite the cold, has been training by running to and from work every day.

Annual Town Wide Yard Sale Coming Up, Benefits Watertown Adult Education

The Annual Town Wide Yard Sale is coming up and you can book  your space now and help Watertown Adult Education. Organizers sent out the following information:

Schedule your yard sale at your home on May 14. For a fee of $10, we will do the advertising, provide a list of addresses to Buyers and  make it a community event for all to enjoy. OBIT: James P. Ferdinand, Sr., 82, Coast Guard Vet, Painter

A Funeral Service will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at 10 a.m. in the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home, Watertown for James P. Ferdinand, Sr.

Jim was a son of the late James E. and Mary (Costa) Ferdinand. He passed away in the Nashua Crossing Health Care, Nashua, NH, on Friday morning after a long illness. He was 82. Born in Cambridge, Jim joind the US Coast Guard. He was a self-employed painting contractor. A member of the Nonantum Post 440, Newton, enjoyed league bowling and enjoyed boating.

Mount Auburn Hospital Hosts Discussion on Transitioning to Medicare

Mount Auburn Hospital will host a discussion on the basics of Medicare at its facility in Waltham. The hospital sent out the following announcement:

Transitioning from an employer-sponsored health plan to Medicare can be a confusing process. Mount Auburn Hospital recognizes this and is pleased to present Medicare 101, an informative discussion about Medicare. Topics include how Medicare works, Parts A-D of the plan, how to enroll and more. There will also be a Q&A portion to the evening and light refreshments will be served.

A new business where fashionable young people can trade in their clothes for money or to get some of the store’s gently used items open today just over the line in Waltham. Plato’s Closet sent the following information:

New Joint Replacement Center Opening at Mount Auburn Hospital

On Monday, April 4, Mount Auburn Hospital will officially open the new Longfellow Center for Joint Replacement, where a team of experienced and skilled surgeons come together with caring physician assistants, specially-trained nurses, therapists and technicians to deliver seamless, coordinated care for the growing number of patients seeking hip and knee replacements, the hospital announced. The Center is located on the 3rd floor of Mount Auburn’s South Building. “The creation of the Center is a response to the large and growing numbers of joint replacement patients we are caring for every year,” says Jeanette Clough, President and CEO of Mount Auburn Hospital. “Not only are people needing joint replacement at a younger age but we also have an aging population that is remaining active later in life and looking to joint replacement to allow them to continue to bike, hike, golf and enjoy life well into their 70s and 80s.”

Experienced orthopedic surgeons Dr. Robert Miegel and Dr. Anthony Schena from Pro Sports Orthopedics will conduct the surgeries and the Center is run by Coordinator Deborah Levenson, MSPT who will oversee all facets of the patient experience including comprehensive pre and post surgery patient education.  “My goal is to interact with every patient that enters the Center on a daily basis,” says Levenson. “I will meet the patients prior to admission, I will accompany the doctors when they make their rounds and I will make sure that each patient gets compassionate, personalized care.

OBIT: Frank McManus, 74, Painter, Loved to Cook for His Big Family

A graveside service will be held on Friday April 1, 2016 at the St. Patrick Cemetery, Watertown at 10:30 am for Francis “Frank” McManus. Frank was the beloved son of the late Helen and Charles McManus of Watertown. He passed away in Derry, New Hampshire on Sunday morning while visiting family. He was 74. “Pudgie” as he was known to his family and friends, was a lifelong Watertown resident before moving to Franklin in 2014.

Watertown Boys & Girls Club Seeks Donations, Sponsors for Annual Auction

The Watertown Boys & Girls Club will host its annual auction to raise money for its programs that serve Watertown’s youth. Organizers are selling tickets, and also are seeking donations and sponsors. The Boys and Girls Club sent out the following information:

For more than 40 years, the Watertown Boys & Girls Club has provided the youth of our community with safe and fun afterschool and summer programming. As we strive to widen and deepen our impact in the community, your support is critical to our success. The Annual Spring Auction, to be held on Thursday, May 5, 2016 at the Oakley Country Club, helps raise crucial funds to support our mission, “to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.”
