NewRep Hosting Evening with Famed Author Armistead Maupin

New Repertory Theatre announced it will be hosting “A Conversation With Author Armistead Maupin.” 

The author of the Tales of the City series will be interviewed by former Boston Globe theatre critic Louise Kennedy on Monday, February 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the MainStage Theater at the Mosesian Center for the Arts, 321 Arsenal St., Watertown. Launched in 1976 as a groundbreaking serial in the San Francisco Chronicle, Armistead Maupin’s iconic Tales of the City series has since blazed its own trail through popular culture. Hear him talk about creating the series and his new book, a memoir titled Logical Family (October 2017) which grew out of his critically acclaimed one-man show of the same name. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with a pre-discussion reception with Mr. Maupin at Branch Line Restaurant for VIP ticket holders. The discussion begins at 7:30 p.m. and there will be a post-conversation book signing

Watertown Artist’s Works Being Shown at Weston Library

The works of Watertown’s Paul Angiolillo are now on display at the Weston Public Library, and a reception will be held on Jan., 18, 2018. The Watertown-based artist carves and sculpts both outdoor and indoor works. He creates sculptures, furniture art, and functional objects out of natural and found materials, he aims for the evocative, engaging, and sometimes whimsical. “​New Works”​ will be shown in ​​the gallery at the Weston Public Library, ​​87 School St., Weston, MA, through Jan. 30​.

One Book, One Watertown Title for 2018 is ‘Refuge’ by Dina Nayeri

For the 10th year in a row, the Watertown Free Public Library has selected a book for the entire community to read and discuss during the “One Book, One Watertown” celebration. The 2018 selection is the novel Refuge by Dina Nayeri. The Watertown Free Public Library sent out the following announcement:

This year, for the first time, the library is recommending a “read-along” title for younger readers and English language learners: It Ain’t So Awful, Falafel by Firoozeh Dumas. According to librarian Pauli Stern, the WFPL chose Refuge “because of the insight it provides into the bravery and perseverance needed to overcome the obstacles of language, culture, and bureaucracy, while striving to find a feeling of belonging and home.”

Author Dina Nayeri, who lives in London, will visit Watertown on Thursday, March 1. Nayeri will speak at the WFPL at 7:00 p.m., following a 6:00 p.m. tasting of Persian food from Roksana’s Restaurant.

Revels Performing Night of Mediterranean Music in Watertown

Revels singing group will be present a night of Mediterranean music and song with Tenores de Aterúe – in Concert in Watertown on Saturday Jan. 20, 2018. The evening features Gideon Crevoshay, Avery Book, Carl Linich, and Doug Paisley. The concert will be at Belmont-Watertown United Methodist Church, 80 Mt. Auburn Street, Watertown, on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 7:30 p.m.

Watertown Resident Singing as Part of Boston’s First Night Day Celebrations

Watertown resident Kim Leeds will sing alto in The Museum of African American History/The Handel & Haydn Society’s Sixth Annual Jubilee Day Concert, which is part of Boston’s First Night Day Celebrations. The Handel & Haydn Society sent out the following information:

The Handel and Haydn Society and the Museum of African American History proudly announce the sixth annual Jubilee Day Concert, part of First Night First Day Boston, and in partnership with Trinity Church Boston. Conducted by Scott Allen Jarrett and featuring narrated passages from the Emancipation Proclamation by poet Regie Gibson, the concert takes place Sunday, December 31 at 2 pm at Trinity Church, located in Boston’s Copley Square. The concert is free and open to the public, on a first come, first served basis. This year’s Jubilee Day concert program features music by Mendelssohn, Bach, and Handel as well as readings of the Emancipation Proclamation – all based on “two broader themes of ‘Hope in the Lord’ and ‘Be Not Afraid,’” shares conductor Scott Allen Jarrett.

The Mosesian Center for the Arts invites you to celebrate the New Year at First Day 2018! This free, family-friendly, drop-in open house will take place Monday, January 1st from 10 am to 2 pm at  321 Arsenal Street in Watertown and offers Art & Theatre Activities, fortunes, a Ball Drop at Noon, a New Year’s Photo Booth, and more! Attendees will be treated to special performances by Karen K & The Jitterbugs (12:15 pm) and Gillie Assunção (1:30 pm) – the remarkable Brazilian born Baritone recently unveiled at Russo’s Market here in Watertown! Performances are limited to capacity and guests will reserve a seat upon check-in at the event. The Center’s Black Box Theater will host an open Dance Party and Mad Hatter’s Indoor Picnic Area.
