See How Watertown Will Celebrate Arbor Day

Some of the tables at the Town of Watertown’s Arbor Day Celebration. This year it will take place on April 25. Watertown will celebrate Arbor Day with a day of service, and also provide information for people interested in trees, gardening and other related topics. On Thursday, April 25, Watertown Tree Warden Chris Hayward will work with local companies to do maintenance on trees in Arsenal Park. “The trees need trimming and removal of some branches,” Hayward said.

Person with Measles May Have Exposed People in Waltham

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health warns the public that a person with a confirmed case of measles may have exposed others in several locations, including in Waltham. The Mass DPH put out the following information:

Locations include Plymouth, Hyannis, Waltham, Framingham and Braintree. Those exposed or developing symptoms are urged to contact their healthcare provider. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) has confirmed that a person was diagnosed with measles in greater Boston on Sunday, March 31, 2019. During the infectious period, the individual went to locations where other people may have been exposed.

Limited Number of Scholarships Available for BB&N Summer Camp

The following information was provided by the Watertown Recreation Department:

The Watertown Recreation Department is pleased to announce the offering of a limited number of scholarships for Watertown families whose children would like to attend the Buckingham Browne & Nichols Summer Camp. Each candidate must have a demonstrated and documented need for financial assistance or has a special circumstance that is considered exceptional. The Town of Watertown is grateful to the Buckingham Browne & Nichols School for offering this outstanding opportunity. The camp options are identified at www.bbnsummer.com, and scholarships are for any of their programs. Each child may attend two weeks of camp and if awarded the scholarship will be in the amount of $350 each week toward the cost of the camp. This scholarship is available for Watertown residents only.

The Watertown Community Foundation (WCF) announces two Spring 2019 grant programs to support local nonprofits, programs and projects. Approximately $52,000 will be distributed. One: WCF’s Program Grants will award grants designed to help organizations that serve Watertown develop new or continue existing programs with an educational focus (broadly defined). These are programs that operate outside of the Watertown’s public schools. Two: WCF’s Institutional Grants are designed to help institutions central to the Watertown community by providing funds to maintain critical programming and retain paid staff.

Free Screening of Movie That Raises Awareness About Anxiety This Week

IndieFlix, a leading independent online streaming platform, along with its non-profit arm, the IndieFlix Foundation, is sparking a global conversation about anxiety through screenings of its brand-new documentary, “Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety.”

On April 4, 2019, The Watertown Community Foundation and Watertown Middle School PTO will hold a special screening of the documentary at Watertown Middle School auditorium to open up a dialogue between local families, community leaders and experts. The event will feature a viewing of the 56-minute film Producers Scilla Andreen and Karin Gornick have one goal: to start a global conversation and raise awareness around anxiety. Through candid interviews, they utilize the power of film to tell the stories of many kids and teens who discuss their anxiety and its impacts on their lives and relationships, as well as how they’ve found solutions and hope. The film also includes a special interview with Michael Phelps, a mental health advocate and one of the greatest athletes of all- time. In addition, the documentary provides discussions with mental health experts about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects, along with the help, resources and tools available to address the condition.

Watertown Youth Coalition Organizes Town Hall Meeting, Thanks Supporters

The Youth Peer Leaders from Watertown High School helped organize the Well-Being of Watertown Youth Town Hall Meeting along with the Watertown Youth Coalition. The following piece was provided by Samantha Chan of the Watertown Youth Coalition:

On Wednesday evening, March 20, 2019, the Watertown Youth Coalition Peer Leaders had their theatrical debut in a skit called “Welcome to Rehab”, which was written as a collaboration between the Improbable Players and Peer Leaders, and directed by Andy Short. This impactful performance depicted what addiction to substances can look like for both teenagers and adults, and how it affects the important people in their lives. Following the act, the Peer Leaders facilitated discussions around substance use, racial equity, sexual and gender identity, and mental health. These topic areas were drawn from quotes of attendees of the 2018 Town Hall meeting.
