The most wonderful time of the year? This is the sentiment that surrounds us during the holiday season. Celebrate, Be merry. From television, to radio, in schools, homes, and work, everywhere you turn these are the messages we see but for many this is not the case. This time of year, brings pain and sadness and can leave people feeling isolated and
alone.

Winter Parking Ban Temporarily Lifted for the Holidays

Watertown Police Chief sent out the following letter:

Dear Watertown,

With the Holidays fast approaching, the Watertown Police Department recognizes the need for additional overnight parking to accommodate visiting family members and friends. Chief of Police Michael P. Lawn wishes to announce that effective December 23, 2017 officers will temporarily stop enforcing the All Night Parking Ban – barring any snowfall that would require plowing or sanding. Should there be a snow event please refer to the town website for available off street parking locations. Chief Lawn still encourages all homeowners to use available off street parking during the overnight hours. Enforcement of the All Night Parking ban will resume on January 3, 2018.

Watertown Teens Attend Summit to Learn About Tobacco Prevention

The Watertown Youth Coalition Peer Leaders of the Wayside Multi-Service Center joined over 90 youth recently from around the Commonwealth at The 84 Movement’s Youth Power Summit in Worcester, Massachusetts at UMass Medical School, the Youth Coalition announced. Five Watertown High School students, Olivia Haggerty, Eva Henry, Shariel Joseph, Shama Joseph, and Marcus Moore, accompanied by their advisor, Dawn Graham, joined others to learn how Big Tobacco makes their products sweet, cheap, and easy to get, and about how to make their voices heard to challenge tobacco industry tactics. The Watertown Youth Coalition Peer Leaders attended workshops on the basics of leadership and civic engagement. They learned skills to be effective change agents in their communities, such as identifying the issues through surveys, getting their messages heard, and gathering resources and allies. Youth also learned the context of tobacco use in Massachusetts, new skills to promote tobacco prevention, and they took part in leadership-building activities.

Support Group Meeting for Family, Friends of People with Mental Illness

Mental Illness support group: NAMI Family Support Group is a free, structured, confidential peer-led support group for family members, caregivers and loved ones of individuals living with mental illness. 
Organizers announced a support group will be held on Wednesday, December 20, 7:30-9 p.m. at the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church, 207 Washington Street in Wellesley Hills. This is organized by the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI).

New Lights Being Installed Along Community Path Between Whites, Waverley Aves.

A new set of decorative street lights is to planned be installed along the pathway that leads from Whites Avenue to Waverley Avenue, just west of Saltonstall Park. The project, along what is called the Community Path or Linear Park, would install 11 new lights on decorative light posts, that are about 12 feet tall, said Dennis Sheehan, the Department of Public Works Director of Administration and Finance. He presented the project to the Town Council’s Public Works subcommittee last week.

Installation of New Pedestrian Bridge Over Charles River Delayed

Originally scheduled to be installed in November, the debut of the new pedestrian bridge over the Charles River has been pushed back to December at the earliest. Conservation Commission Chairman Leo Martin provided an update on the project during the board’s meeting last week. Martin spoke to officials from the Department of Conservation and Recreation, which oversees the Charles and the area around it. “The problem is the fabrication of the bridge is ongoing,” Martin said. “Originally a firm from North Carolina was supposed to build it.

Watertown Church Hosting Service for Those Who Struggle to be Jolly During the Holidays

Church of the Good Shepherd announced it will once again host a Blue Christmas service this year. This service is particularly for those who find it hard to be jolly at the holidays, due to grief, loss, or concerns for the world. The gathering includes song, prayer, readings, and a chance to light a candle in remembrance. A reception follows. The service will be Wednesday, December 13 at 7 pm, Church of the Good Shepherd, 9 Russell Ave., Watertown

Watertown Man Promoted to Vice President With Fenway Sports Management

A Watertown man has been promoted to vice president of Fenway Sports Management. The organization sent out the following announcement:
