Watertown Cultural Council Has Grants for Community-Oriented Projects

Got an event, activity, or community festival that needs funding? The Watertown Cultural Council (WCC) is preparing to allocate grants for 2016 and is looking for proposals for community-oriented projects in the arts, humanities, and science. Applications are due Oct. 17, 2016. Any organization, school, individual, or group may apply for a WCC grant. These grants support a variety of artistic projects and activities in Watertown.

Refugees, Immigrants Discuss Their Experiences at Local Forum

On Sunday, Oct. 2, New Roads Social Justice Ministry presented a Forum entitled “Refugees and Immigrants: Their Rights – Our Responsibilities.”  Moderated by Attorney Christopher Lavery of the Irish International Immigrant Center. The gathering at St. Joseph’s Church in Belmont included a diverse group of speakers, including immigrants from Syria, Congo, Burma, El Salvador and Haiti, who shared harrowing tales of seeking refuge. Keynote speakers included Watertown resident Gabriel Camacho, who is Coordinator of Immigration Programs for the American Friends Service Committee.

An informational meeting for the time-limited solar offer for the towns of Watertown, Arlington, Cambridge, Belmont, and Somerville, endorsed by the Watertown Environmental and Energy Efficiency Committee, Sustainable Arlington, and Green Cambridge will be held at the Arlington Library Community Room, Robbins Public Library, 700 Massachusetts Ave., Arlington, MA, on Oct. 25, 2016 at 7 p.m.

This solar initiative is designed to be local, fair, and transparent. Details are available at neighborhoodsolar.org. The program is open to all residents, businesses, and non-profits. Watertown-Based Charitable Fund Seeks Part-Time Administrator

The Marshall Home Fund, a non‐profit charitable fund providing financial assistance to Watertown seniors and to organizations serving older adults in Watertown, seeks a part‐time Administrator. Duties will include:
• being the primary contact for information about the Fund
• facilitating communications between grant recipients and the Board of Directors;
• providing clerical and communications support to a volunteer Board of Directors and to board committees;
• maintaining records; electronic and paper;
• helping to promote the fund’s activities within the community. The successful candidate will:
• have the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and be able to take meeting minutes;
• possess excellent organizational skills;
• be proficient in Microsoft Office Applications including Excel;
• be knowledgeable in general office procedures;
• demonstrate a high level of maturity, ability to work independently and take initiative, while closely and accurately coordinating efforts with Board officers, committee chairs, and other Board members;
• have the ability to be discrete, tactful and diplomatic, insuring the confidentiality of individual assistance grant transactions. Salary: depends on experience

Start Date: December, 2016

Opening: Part‐time (approximately 6‐8 hours per week). Hours are generally flexible, except for pre‐arranged Board and committee meetings.

Find Out About Low Vision from Movie, Discussion at The Residence

Did you know that over 25 percent of Americans over the age of 75 have some form of vision impairment and that over the age of 85, one out of three of elders are suffering from low vision? Join us Oct. 19 at The Residence at Watertown Square from 5-7 p.m. for a movie and panel discussion on low vision. A 50 minute film on vision loss will be shown. The movie looks at each aspect of vision loss; detecting, treating and coping.

Watertown Cable Access Corp. (WCA-TV) will be having an open house on Wednesday, October 26th from 6 to 9 p.m. at our station located inside Watertown High School. Residents of Watertown are invited to come check out Watertown’s own cable access station to take a tour of the studio, learn about workshops and volunteer opportunities, and learn about producing their very own radio or television program. The WCA-TV staff will be on hand to answer questions about workshops, programming, volunteering, internships, and more. We encourage organizations, businesses, non-profits, and all the people who live in Watertown to get involved at WCA-TV, so come learn what we’re all about! Find Out About the Watertown Rotary Club at “Rotary on Tap” at Branch Line

On Thursday, Oct. 13 the Rotary Club will be having a “Rotary on Tap”  function at Branch Line in the Arsenal on the Charles from 5:30-7 p.m. 

Potential members  are invited along with others interested in learning about the things Watertown Rotary Club does in the community and how they can get involved. Members of the Rotary Club come from big and small businesses, and the club raises money throughout the year to give back to the Watertown community and beyond. Every dollar raised gets put to use for those less fortunate. The Rotary Club just wrapped up our 24th Annual Senior Citizens cookout that fed and entertained over 200 Seniors for free.
