Sign Up Open for the Middlesex Sheriff’s Youth Public Safety Academy

Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian announced applications are now available for youngsters interested in participating in the Sheriff’s 2016 Youth Public Safety Academy (YPSA). Celebrating its 17th year, YPSA provides a safe, educational, low-cost summer camp option for Middlesex County youth. “I am excited to once again be able to offer this program for youngsters from communities across the county,” said Sheriff Koutoujian. “Thanks to our tremendous staff and our public safety partners, YPSA provides a fun-filled and educational environment for children to learn about public safety and get to know not only our officers, but also the police officers and firefighters from their own communities.”

YPSA is open to children ages 9-11, with six one-week camps beginning on July 5. Transportation and lunch are provided for all participants.

The Watertown Public Health Department will host a Household Sharps Collection Day on Saturday, April 23 from 9 a.m-noon. 

The collection will take place in the parking lot behind Watertown Town Hall, 149 Main St. Watertown residents may bring the following:

Used Needles, syringes, and lancets, stored in sturdy puncture proof containers
Unused capped needles, syringes and lancets in original packaging
Sharps containers

Note: No Medical Waste or Commercial sharps accepted. Proof of Watertown residency is required. This Public Service has been organized and sponsored by: Watertown Health Department

Watertown Police Hosting Prescription Drug Take Back Day

If you have unused and expired medications, you can dispose of them safely and in and environmentally friendly way at the Watertown Police Station. Prescription Drug Take Back Day will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Watertown Police Department, Overdose Prevention & Education Network (OPEN), and Wayside Youth and Family Support Network. Bring medication you no longer need to the Watertown Police Department, 552 Main Street, Watertown. A medication drop-box is available 24/7 in the front lobby. Hundreds Celebrate Watertown Strong Spirit at 3rd Annual 5K Run

Nearly 500 runners and walkers came out to take part in the race that was created to celebrate the spirit shown in Watertown after the capture of the Boston Marathon Bombers. 

Participants in third annual Watertown Strong 5K enjoyed sunny weather on Sunday. New Police Chief Michael Lawn thanked all those who came out to join in the race, or just to come watch. He remembered how the Watertown community pulled together during the lockdown and celebrated after the the capture of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on April 19, 2013. Retired-Police Chief Edward Deveau also attended the event, which started and ended at Tufts Health Plan. As she has the last two years, Caillie Hughes performed her song “That Night” and sang the National Anthem before the race.

Mount Auburn Hospital Offering Free Workshop on Fall Prevention

Mount Auburn Hospital has a program for older adults concerned about having a fall. 
The hospital sent out the following announcement:

Many older adults experience concerns about falling and restrict their activities. Mount Auburn Hospital recognizes this concern and has developed its award-winning program to help patients prevent and manage their falls, while staying or becoming more active. This spring, the hospital is pleased to present the A Matter of Balance workshop, an eight-week group focused on learning to view falls as controllable. Participants will set goals for increasing activity, make changes to reduce fall risks at home, and learn exercises to increase strength and balance. WHEN: Every Thursday for 8 weeks from April 27th – June 16th from 1-3 p.m.

Watertown Group Invites People to Join Them at Mothers Day Walk for Peace

On Mothers Day, May 8, 2016 please join a group from Watertown and thousands of other walkers for the annual Mothers Day Walk for Peace. The walk will start in Fields Corner, Dorchester and end at Boston City Hall, a route of 6.8 miles, Watertown Walks for Peace announced. You are invited to walk for all or part of the route. Buses will leave Watertown for Fields Corner at 7:15 am from the parking lot at the First Parish of Watertown, 35 Church St., Watertown. Opening remarks begin at Fields Corner at 8 a.m.; the walk begins at 8:30.
