Group Backing Community Preservation Act Tours a Hidden Natural Area

Invest in Watertown launched its effort to pass the Community Preservation Act (CPA) in town with a tour of an area that could be upgraded with funds from the CPA program. The group submitted the following account of the day:

On Saturday, Feb. 6, a hardy group of some 50 persons aged 2 to 82 gathered near Walker Pond in western Watertown. Guided by Leo Martin of the Watertown Conservation Commission, they had come to view firsthand some of the town’s few remaining open spaces and officially launch Invest in Watertown, a campaign to bring the Community Preservation Act to Watertown. The Community Preservation Act, enacted in 2000, enables Massachusetts municipalities to dedicate funds annually for the acquisition, preservation, rehabilitation and restoration of open space, affordable housing, and historic resources.

Armenian Relief Society Seeks Applicants for Scholarships

The Armenian Relief Society (ARS), Eastern USA recently announced that it is now accepting applications to its annual Undergraduate and Graduate Lazarian Scholarship Program. Applications for this year’s scholarship will be accepted until April 1. Applicants must be of Armenian descent and must have already completed at least one college semester at an accredited institution in the United States. Scholarship grants are awarded based on a combination of financial need, merit, and involvement in the Armenian community.

Watertown’s Church of the Good Shepherd Holds Ash Wednesday Services

It’s Ash Wednesday, and residents are invited to attended services at the Church of the Good Shepherd. The church sent out this announcement:

For Christians in Watertown, Feb. 10 marks the beginning of the holy season of Lent. Church of the Good Shepherd will offer two Ash Wednesday services: 7:15 a.m. – A shorter, spoken service, with imposition of ashes, and 7:00 pm – Full liturgy with music, imposition of ashes, and Holy Eucharist. 9 Russell Ave., Watertown.

STORM WATCH: Monday’s RMUD Meeting Cancelled by Snow

Monday’s storm looks like it could will leave several inches of snow on Watertown, and has closed schools in town, and could have other impacts. The Watertown Public Schools are closed again Monday. The National Weather Service issuing a Winter Storm Warning through 7 a.m. Tuesday. The snow is expected to arrive in Watertown just before 9 a.m., according to Fox25’s weather report. The Boston area could get 6-10 inches in the worst areas around Massachusetts, according to the National Weather Service.

Watertown Senior Center Has Plenty on Offer in February

It may be the depth of winter, but the Watertown Senior Center is full of activities this month. The Senior Center sent out the following announcement:

SCOTT SANCHEZ – Winter Concert Series

An experienced classical guitarist, Scott Sanchez is recognized by audience members, concert presenters, and reviewers for his unique artistry and solid musicianship. He currently teaches guitar and guitar ensemble at Franklin Pierce University. His eclectic repertoire includes music by Manuel Ponce, Astor Piazzola, Agustin Barrios, Joaquin Turina and Dave Brubeck. Eliza Dushku’s ‘Dear Albania’ Documentary Airing on WGBH Thursday

If you have not caught Eliza Dushku’s documentary film about the trip to her ancestral homeland of Albania, WGBH will air it Thursday night. 

The hour-long film, Dear Albania, will air at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4 on Channel 2 in Boston. The Watertown-native made the film with her brother Nate. Dushku spoke with Watertown News about her film, other project and her work to help those fighting addiction in early January when Dear Albania debuted on PBS. Read the piece by clicking here.
