Police Log: Man Harasses Woman Using Vulgar Language, Gravestones Vandalized

July 3, 9:30 a.m.: An officer spotted a vehicle run a red light in Watertown Square. The vehicle was pulled over, and police discovered the man driving did not have a driver’s license. The 30-year-old man from Marlborough was arrested on a charge of unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. Incidents
July 3, 5:30 p.m.: A 20-year-old resident of the Archstone Apartments on Watertown Street said she was using her laptop when she realized someone had hacked in and was using her computer remotely.

Watertown Schools Get Bomb Threat by Email, Police Find No Devices

Watertown Public School officials said they received an email with a bomb threat directed toward all the Watertown schools Friday morning, but police found nothing when they searched the campuses. Most of the schools are not being used this summer, but Watertown Police searched each of the schools, said Watertown Police Lt. James O’Connor. “We checked all the schools and nothing was found,” O’Connor said. The Hosmer School is hosting the Watertown Recreation Department’s Pequossette Summer Program, so the school will be monitored through the day, said Watertown Superintendent Dede Galdston in her letter to parents. Similar threats have been made in recent days to schools in nearby communities, O’Connor said, including Newton, Waltham and Belmont.

Town Exploring Creating Memorial to Fallen Watertown Firefighter

The corner of the street where the fire that took the life of Watertown Firefighter Joe Toscano occurred could be named in his honor, as Watertown firefighters seek to create a memorial for their fallen comrade. Tuesday night, the proposal was brought forward officially by East End Town Councilor Angeline Kounelis, who was supported by members of the Watertown Fire Department. “This past March 17 a tragedy occurred in our community, something I hope we never go through again,” Kounelis said. “It is a morning that many of us will never forget.” She proposed that the Town honor Toscano for making the “ultimate sacrifice” of giving his life in the line of duty by creating a permanent memorial.

Police Log: Woman Tries to Use False Prescription, Bracelet Stolen

Arrests
June 29, 10 p.m.: Security at Target spotted a man taking a cell phone and hiding it in his sweatshirt pocket. The man left the store without paying for the phone but was stopped. The phone is valued at $129.99. While investigating, Police found pills for which the man did not have a prescription. The pills were identified as Amitriptylin.

Incidents
June 19, 4:30 p.m.: A woman came to the Police Station to report that when she was applying for a loan she found some discrepancies on her credit report. It showed someone had opened two credit cards in her name and charged $2,000. Also, four student loans for a total of $15,000 were opened in her name, and there was a mortgage in her name for $10,000. The woman is working with the credit bureau to work out the problems.

June 19, 7 p.m.: A resident reported receiving a package from UPS and inside the person found five Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus phones inside which the resident did not order.

Missing Man

Body of Missing Watertown Man Discovered Off Deer Island

The body of a missing 26-year-old Watertown has been located near Deer Island, Watertown Police announce Tuesday. 

Fisherman discovered the body on June 8 in the water near Deer Island, and State Environmental Police recovered the body. The Office of the State Medical Examiner positively identified the man as Nolan Gargas of Watertown, according to Watertown Police Lt. James O’Connor. The cause of death remains undetermined, O’Connor said. Gargas was reported missing on May 21, and his Toyota was found near the shore in Nahant. A $25,000 reward had been set up to find Gargas.

Police Log: Woman Bought Alcohol for Teen, Man Tries Unsuccessfully to Flee Police

June 12, 5:50 p.m.: Police received a report of a customer causing a disturbance at Domino’s Pizza. The man left before officers arrived, and was seen riding his bicycle toward Watertown Square. Police located him and while checking his identity they found he had an outstanding warrant. The 25-year-old Waltham man was arrested on the warrant from Waltham District Court for destruction of property over $250.

State Police Recovers Body from Charles River in Watertown

The Massachusetts State Police recovered a body from the Charles River on Sunday morning, and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office does not consider the death suspicious. The State Police received a report from the Newton Yacht Club for a report of a body in the river on the Watertown side, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office. “The body has been identified as an 84 year old Newton man. This death is not being considered suspicious and no foul play is suspected,” a statement from the Middlesex DA’s office said. The State Police Marine Unit and State Police Troop 11 from Brighton responded to the area of Charles River Road for the call that came in at 8:40 a.m., according to Lt. Tom Ryan of the State Police.
