Sen. Markey Praises WHS Field Hockey’s Historic Streak on Capitol Hill

Massachusetts Sen. Edward Markey praised the achievement of Watertown High School’s field hockey team on the floor of  the U.S. Senate this week, after the team’s unbeaten streak ended after 184 games. “For nearly nine years the Raiders have been truly perfect,” Markey said, adding that the team set the longest unbeaten streak in national high school field hockey history. He added that WHS field hockey coach Eileen Donohue is “one of the most historic figures in Massachusetts High School athletics. Watertown lost for the first time since Nov. 12, 2008 on Tuesday when they fell 3-0 in a game at Winchester High School.

Watertown field hockey team’s record of success became legendary. A Raider win seemed so reliable that you could set your watch to it. But the day that seemed like it may never come arrived Monday when Watertown lost its first game in more than eight years. The Raiders’ streak extended for 184 games, setting a new national record unbeaten steak. At the same time, they set the standard high school field hockey programs by winning 124 straight.

Raiders Kick Off Football Season With Victory Over Arlington Catholic

The Watertown High School football team picked up where it finished last season – with a victory. 

The Raiders defeated Arlington Catholic 50-28 in its non-league home opener on Friday night at Victory Field. This year, Watertown will be lead by junior quarterback Nick McDermott, and the team showed offensive firepower with more than 500 yards on the night. McDermott had 187 yards and threw two touchdowns. One of his main targets was senior wide receiver John Korte, who caught both touchdowns and had 163 yards on six receptions. The Raiders hit the road for two straight games before hosting Burlington on Sept.

Watertown High Grad Plays for Armenia’s Under 20 Basketball Team

Current Suffolk University and former Watertown High School basketball player Michael Hagopian got the chance to represent Armenia in the FIBA Under-20 European Championships, Division B this summer. Hagopian played in all six of Armenia’s games in the tournament in Romania, averaging 8.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists per contest. His shooting percentage was better from behind the three-point line (47.8 percent) than he was from the floor (35.2 percent). His three-point accuracy was second highest on the team and 10th highest in the competition. He was the team’s fourth highest scorer.

Watertown Summer Basketball League Finals Go Three Games, HBC Wins

The Finals of the Watertown Summer Basketball League went to a third and deciding game on Thursday and HBC took the title with a 62-38 win over Donohue’s Kaos Club. After losing game 1, HBC rebounded with two strong performances to defeat the defending champions, the Recreation Department announced. HBC was lead by Andrew Madlinger’s 14 points. Earlier in the evening, the Control Club and Johnson Club punched their ticket to the O’Brien-Jerahian Finals, the legends league, which will begin Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Saltonstall Park. Control swept the Finnegan Club by the score of 69-52, while the Johnson Club advanced by nipping the Kaos Club by the score of 52-49.

Get your tickets now for the 2017 Watertown High School Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet, where the inductions will include four former outstanding athletes. The Hall of Fame Banquet organizers sent out the following information:

Tickets are now available for the Watertown High School Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet to be held at the St. James Armenian Church Hall on Saturday, Oct. 21. Doors will open at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The cost is $45 per person.

Highlights of the Watertown Summer Basketball League Semifinals

The semifinals series in the Watertown Summer Basketball League have concluded and the finalists are Donohue’s Kaos Club and HBC. See highlights of the games that take place in the court behind the Watertown Boys and Girls Club, in Saltonstall Park. Game 2 of the best-of-three finals series takes place Wednesday night at 7 p.m. and if needed, the third game will be Thursday at 8:30 p.m.

Watertown Hockey Player Selected Women’s Professional League Draft

Watertown’s Lauren Kelly was selected by the Boston Pride in the 2017 NWHL Draft. Kelly, who plays defense, was taken by the Pride in the fourth round and was selected 16th overall in the National Women’s Hockey League draft on Aug. 17. She is going into her senior year at Northeastern this fall. The Pride enters its third season in 2017-18, and plays its home games at Warrior Ice Arena – the Boston Bruins’ practice facility – in Brighton. Players are typically drafted before their senior year, but finish playing in college before joining their NWHL teams.

Last year, Kelly scored two goals and had eight assists for the Huskies, and played in all of the team’s games.
