WHS Sports: Watertown Runner Makes Top 10 at Cross Country Meet, Swimmer Competes at States

The Watertown girls and boys cross country teams ran in the MIAA Div. 2 meet in Gardner on Saturday, and a sophomore placed among the top finishers. Anna Lonergan finished in eighth place in the girls Div. 2 race.

Eleven Watertown High School athletes from five teams made the Middlesex All-Stars during the 2020 Fall Season. Teams played shortened seasons this fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and three fall sports — football, girls volleyball and girls swimming — were postponed. Girls Cross Country: Anna Lonergan

Football and girls volleyball will be held during the MIAA’s Fall II Season, due to begin in February. Watertown school officials decided to not hold swimming this year because the program is a coop one with Arlington, which would have required students from both schools mixing each day, according to an Athletics Subcommittee report at the Watertown School Committee. Athletes can register now for the Winter Season, which includes boys and girls basketball and boys and girls hockey.

The abbreviated fall high school sports, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, started this week when the Watertown High School golf team took on Wilmington, and other teams will be debuting this weekend. Six fall sports teams will be competing this year: boys and girls cross country, field hockey, boys and girls soccer and golf. Meanwhile, the football, volleyball, swimming and cheerleading teams will wait until “Fall II” which begins in February. Most of the teams will have 10 competitions. The boys and girls cross country teams will have five apiece.

WHS Sports: Football Team on a Winning Streak, Cross Country Wraps Up Season

Watertown senior quarterback Brennan Cook has had multiple touchdown passes in the past two wins for the Raiders. The Watertown High School football team may have missed the tournament, but the Raiders have found their winning ways. The team heads into the Belmont game on a three game winning streak and with a chance to finish with a winning record. On Friday, Watertown traveled to Weston and won handily, 31-7. Four Raiders scored touchdowns in the victory.

Twenty Watertown High School athletes received Middlesex League All-Star honors according lists to the Boston Globe and Boston Herald, and the Raiders had League most valuable players in field hockey and boys soccer. Field hockey goalie Jonna Kennedy was named MVP of the Middlesex League Freedom. She and the Raiders won the Middlesex League, the North Section and the ninth-straight State Championship. Boys soccer player Alex Abrahamyan helped the Raiders win the North Section for the first time since 2013 and reach the state semifinals. He was named co-MVP of the Middlesex League Freedom.
