MBTA Offering Free Fares on Night of Fourth of July

The following announcement was provided by the MBTA:

The MBTA announced that fares will again be free this year on bus, subway, ferry, Commuter Rail, and the RIDE on Friday, July 4, 2025, after 8:30 PM. Boston is regularly predicted to host over a million visitors for the July 4 holiday. To accommodate increased ridership, the MBTA is encouraging travelers to plan their commute in advance and reminding riders of its holiday service schedules. The public is encouraged to take public transportation to and from the 2025 Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular and to other holiday events. The MBTA’s July 4 service schedules continue to be available at mbta.com/holidays.  

“Public transportation in Massachusetts keeps growing because of the bold investments of the Healey-Driscoll Administration, the partnership of local leaders, and the tireless work of our transit teams,” said Transportation Secretary and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt.

The City of Watertown announced the following closings on July 4, 2024:

Watertown City Hall, Parker Annex, Department of Public Works Offices, Senior Center and the Watertown Free Public Library are closed on Thursday, July 4, 2024 in observance of Independence Day. Please be aware that due to the Independence Day holiday on Thursday, July 4, 2024, trash and recycling pickup will be delayed one day. The pickup schedule is Monday, July 1-Wednesday, July 3, 2024 and Friday, July 5-Saturday, July 6, 2024. A holiday postpones pickup by one day.

The City of Watertown announced the schedule for municipal facilities on the Fourth of July. City officials sent out the following information:

Watertown City Hall, Library, and Senior Center, are closed on Independence Day, Monday, July 4, 2022. Have a safe and fun holiday! Due to the holiday being on Monday, the trash and recycling pickup schedule shifts a day to Tuesday, July 5 through Saturday, July 9, 2022. Learn more about Trash and Recycling here.

Watertown Public Safety Announcement: Please leave fireworks to the professionals this summer! 

Massachusetts Fireworks Law MGL Chapter 148, S. 39

It is illegal for private citizens to use, possess, or sell fireworks in Massachusetts, or to purchase them legally elsewhere and then transport them into the state. • Fine for possession or use of fireworks between $10-$100

• Up to a $1,000 fine for the sale of fireworks

Fireworks (including sparklers) are not safe, especially around children. Sparklers burn at temperatures of over 1,800° Fahrenheit! 

Children under age 5 are likely to suffer the worst burn injuries caused by sparklers. We need your help to prevent unnecessary injuries, house fires, property damage, and traumatic experiences for many children, pets, active military, veterans, and other residents. If you have any information on fireworks or to report firework activity, please call the Watertown Police Department at 617-972-6500.

Stock Up for the Fourth of July at the Watertown Farmers Market

The Watertown Farmers Market will be in full swing on Wednesday, July 3, and shoppers can get meats and veggies for the grill, ingredients for salads and the kids can enjoy an Independence Day craft. The market will be open on Wednesday, July 3, from 2:30 – 6:30 p.m. at Saltonstall Park (next to Town Hall). The organizers of the Watertown Farmers Market provided the following information:

Pick up tips, chops, sausages, dogs, and more from Lilac Hedge Farm, all perfect for the grill. And let’s not forget about the veggies such as this Grilled Zucchini and Summer Squash Salad or this Grilled Beet Salad with Caramelized Citrus. Guest vendor, B – Organics, will be selling produce bags to keep those veggies fresh until you’re ready to use them.
