New Rep Holding Tryouts for Three Plays in 2023 Season

New Repertory Theatre will hold auditions for Local Equity actors for roles in New Rep’s 2023 Season: The Normal Heart, June 21 – July 9, and A Raisin in the Sun, September 6 – October 1 in repertory with DIASPORA! September 13 – October 15, at Watertown’s Mosesian Center for the Arts in Watertown, MA.  

The audition dates are:  

Sunday, March 5: 11 am-7 pm, lunch 2:30-3:30pm 

Monday, March 6: 1 pm-9 pm, dinner 4:30-5:30 pm (Union Members Only) 

Sunday, March 12: 11 am-7 pm, lunch 2:30-3:30 pm (Union Members Only)

Call backs will be held on Sunday, April 2nd and/or Monday, April 3rd

The auditions will be held at the Black Box Theater at the Mosesian Center for the Arts, 321 Arsenal Street, Watertown.  Free parking is available in the garage next to the facility.

2023 Season Auditions

New Rep welcome Actors of all races and all gender identities, abilities, and body types. Please take this into consideration when auditioning. In addition to genders listed in character breakdowns, New Rep is ACTIVELY SEEKING TRANS AND NON-BINARY PERFORMERS for all roles. 

New Rep cannot provide local accommodations at this time, so performers must live within commuting distance of the theater.

New Rep Theatre Receives 2 Mass Cultural Council Grants

New Repertory Theatre has received two grants from the Mass Cultural Council (MCC), a state agency: one for $75,000 through its Cultural Sector Fund for Organizations Pandemic Recovery Grant Program, and a $5,000 grant Universal Participation (UPI) Innovation Grant.  

The Pandemic Recovery grant is part of MCC’s historic $51 million public investment into the Commonwealth’s creative and cultural sector to organizations impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In December 2021 a $4 billion pandemic recovery package was approved by the Legislature and signed into law. This Act, Ch. 102 of 2021, directed Mass Cultural Council to develop and administer grant programs to assist cultural organizations and artists recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and operate more efficiently moving forward. Mass Cultural Council received $60.1 million in surplus state revenue funds to support this effort. These funds will provide critical support to offset significant losses incurred from necessary suspension of New Rep’s productions during the height of the pandemic. 

The UPI grant will enable access to artists from diverse communities to develop new works through New Rep’s Pipeline Project, which invests directly in local performing artists, writers and performance makers, providing concrete and tangible pathways at production at the professional level. The Pipeline Project embodies core principles of New Rep’s Renewal Vision, with a renewed commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility and accountability infusing every aspect of the company’s work as it seeks to build community collaborations and give voice to the interests of those communities.

New Rep Theatre Announces Two New Pipeline Project Residencies

New Repertory Theatre is pleased to announce the selection of two new artist residencies for its second round of Pipeline Projects. Selected from over 40 submissions from local artists, these artists represent exceptionally innovative and relevant works for our time. The selected artists are Nikta Sabouri, an Iranian-American freelance theater director, dramaturg, actor, and translator based in Boston and Iranian-American writer, actor and singer Isabelle Sanatdar Stevens. Nikta Sabouri’s project will be the first English translation of the 60-minute play Testament of Bondar Bidakhsh, a dramatic account of the fall of the Vizier to Yama, the King of Persia. This high-ranking official constructed a magical cup to give Yama infinite knowledge and absolute power, which ultimately led to their mutual downfall.  

The Testament of Bondar Bidakhsh is the third play in the “Naqqali Trilogy” book by Bahram Beyzaie.

More Artists Added to New Rep’s Love Weekend Concert

New Repertory Theatre (New Rep) announced more artists performing in The Love Sampler afternoon shows, part of Valentine’s Love Weekend on Saturday, February 11 and Sunday, February 12, at the Mosesian Center for the Arts in Watertown.   

The hour-long Love Sampler, on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre, celebrates love from different cultures and perspectives, showcasing theater and music from a variety of remarkable local talent, including: 

Terri Deletetsky and Maria Hendricks come together with an amazing musical collaboration which aims to reclaim our spiritual spaces. 

Valerie Stephens returns to the stage; this time In her role as actress writer storyteller. Here I Am is a solo moment of truth about aging with a little myth-busting in the process. 

Michael John Ciszewski will be sharing a portion of his third solo show, The Lovefool.  

Following The Love Sampler, internationally-acclaimed,pianist/keyboardistand multi-instrumentalist Yukihiro Kanesaka presents tributes to two of the most soulful, artistic voices of our time, by two of the Boston area’s greatest vocal talents:  

Donny Hathaway, featuring Leon Beal Jr. on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. and 

Roberta Flack, featuring Athene Wilson on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. 

Tickets are $20 for the Saturday afternoon shows, and $25 for the Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon shows. They are on sale now and can be purchased online at: newrep.org.

New Repertory Theatre is pleased to announce its 2023 Season, as the company continues to build on its nearly 40-year legacy of excellent, provocative theatrical productions that speak to the vital issues of our time. The 2023 season includes two Tony Award-winning masterpiece plays that grow more resonant every day, and a world premiere from local talent that speaks directly to Boston and its past, present, and future. Larry Kramer’s Tony Award winning autobiographical drama, The Normal Heart, will open June 21 for a three-week run through July 9. Set in New York City in the early 1980’s, Larry Kramer’s powerful, passionate and controversial play was the first to treat seriously the poignant and devastating subject of AIDS. The Normal Heart traces Ned Weeks, a gay activist writer, through his fight for visibility and justice for the gay community. An angry, unremitting and gripping piece of political theatre.

New Rep Presents Pair of Concerts for “Love Weekend”

New Rep’s Love Weekend features Yukihiro Kanesaka, Leon Beal Jr., and Althene Wilson. The concerts will feature the music of Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack. New Repertory Theatre (New Rep) is proud to present Love Weekend, a theatrical stage experience, on Saturday, February 11 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, February 12 at 2:00 p.m. at the Main Stage Theater at the Mosesian Center for the Arts in Watertown.   

Internationally-acclaimed pianist/keyboardist and multi-instrumentalis Yukihiro Kanesaka will headline this Valentine’s Day event, celebrating love in tributes to two of the most soulful, artistic voices of our time, by two of the Boston area’s greatest vocal talents:  

Donny Hathaway, featuring Leon Beal Jr. on Saturday, Feb. 11, and 

Roberta Flack, featuring Athene Wilson on Sunday, Feb. 12 

Born in Japan, Yukihiro Kanesaka moved to Boston in 2000 to attend Berklee College of Music, where he is now an assistant professor.

New Rep Theatre Seeking Artists Residencies Applications

The following information was provided by New Repertory Theatre:

New Repertory Theatre’s Pipeline Project has extended the deadline for accepting submissions for its next round of artists residencies to October 31, 2022. The Pipeline Project invests directly in local performing artists, writers, and performance makers, providing concrete and tangible pathways to production at the professional level.  

New Rep’s inaugural generation of Pipeline Project Residents was selected by invitation and are now in development pathways to world premieres. This second generation of the Pipeline Project will be selected through an open submission process. Some examples of eligible projects and people, though we are not limited to the scope listed, below:

Playwrights and writers who are developing new work for performance Directors seeking to revitalize classics, or take a new look at overlooked material Directors devising new material, or adapting pre-existing material Solo Artists, seeking time, space, and/or collaborators including but not limited to Directors, Choreographers, and Composers Performance artists creating work to be performed for an audience Musicians and Composers expanding their work into a theatrical medium: Concept Albums, Immersive Concerts, Storytelling/Narrative infused concerts Dancers, Choreographers and Mover-Makers collaborating with other dancers/performers

New Rep is actively seeking works that lack access in the New England area, including new musicals, works by or about the Indigenous experience, works by or featuring disabled performers, solo works, and interactive/site specific works. The New Rep team will work with the selected artists in residence to create developmental support frameworks and a schedule for development. Such support can be composed of: dramaturgy, research, seeking out collaborators, table reads/staged readings, feedback from artistic staff, rehearsal space, prop/material acquisition, and more. Financial justice is a key value of the Pipeline Project and New Rep’s relaunch process.

Charlie BreitroseA special performance of New Rep Theatre’s “Listen to Sipu” was held during the first Watertown Indigenous Peoples Day held at the First Parish Church. People filled the First Parish Church hall on Monday, Oct. 10 to celebrate Watertown’s first Indigenous Peoples Day. The audience heard from keynote speaker Elizabeth Solomon, a representative of the Massachusett Nation, about issues facing Indigenous People today and the effects of colonialism. Charlie BreitroseElizabeth Solomon, a representative of the Massachusett Nation, gave the keynote address during to the audience at the First Parish Church during Indigenous Peoples Day.
