Watertown Delays Start of Some Trash & Recycling Changes

Watertown DPWWatertown’s trash, recycling, compost toters. Recently the Department of Public Works announced changes to trash and recycling collection in Watertown. The changes were to have taken effect soon, but some programs will be delayed. The new rules for collection of bulk items that don’t fit into trash bins, TVs & appliances, and mattresses will not go into effect until a date to be announced. When the new rules take effect, residents will have to schedule pickup of these items and will pay a fee to have the items collected.

The Labor Day holiday will impact trash and recycling, as well as City facilities such as City Hall and the Library. City officials announced that Watertown City Hall, the Watertown Free Public Library and the Senior Center will be closed in observance of Labor Day on Monday, September 5, 2022. The City also announced that due to the Labor Day holiday the trash and recycling pickup will be moved to Tuesday, September 6 through Saturday, September 10, 2022. Therefore, a home that normally has trash and recycling on Monday will be on Tuesday, those on Tuesday will be Wednesday, and so on. Watertown Residents Can Recycle Styrofoam, Shred Paper at DPW Event

Get rid of your styrofoam, old clothing and shred paper at the upcoming recycling event hosted by the Watertown Department of Public Works. The event will take place on Saturday, June 4, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will be held in the parking lot of the Jewish Community Day School, 57 Stanley Ave., Watertown, rain or shine. Vendors will include those collecting textiles (HELPSY), Styrofoam (Save That Stuff) and paper shredding (Stericycle). 

Proof of residency must be provided.

Trash and Recycling Collection Delayed by Patriots Day, See Upcoming Holidays

A holiday postpones Trash and Recycling collection by one day. Here are the rest of the 2022 holidays:

Six Residents Sought to Serve on Watertown’s New Solid Waste & Recycling Committee

The City of Watertown sent out the following announcement:

City Manager Michael J. Driscoll is seeking six (6) Watertown citizens interested in serving onthe Solid Waste and Recycling Advisory Committee. The Honorable City Council adopted Resolution 2022-01, a Resolution to Establish a Solid Waste and Recycling Advisory Committee at their January 11, 2022 meeting. The City of Watertown has established a Solid Waste and Recycling Advisory Committee in response to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s aggressive goals of the Commonwealth’s Solid Waste Master Plan to reduce disposal statewide by 30 percent from 2020 to 2030, and sets a long-term goal of achieving a 90 percent reduction in disposal statewide by 2050. The Committee’s responsibilities are defined as follows:

a. Research and make recommendations relating to recycling and reduction of solid wasteso that Watertown can meet the Commonwealth’s Solid Waste Master Plan milestones. b. Develop and engage in communication, education, and community outreach to increasepublic awareness for recycling and reduction of solid waste, including Watertown PublicSchools, the Farmers Market, Faire in the Square, and other venues.

Snow Storm: Watertown Trash Pick up Postponed, Restaurant Serving Warm Specialty Drink

Snow falls on Watertown on Jan. 7, 2022. Trash and recycling pick up will be delayed by the snow storm for residents with a Friday collection day. The Watertown Department of Public Works announced Friday morning that due to higher snowfall than projected, the City’s trash contractor — Republic — moved the trash and recycling collection from Friday to Saturday. Watertown DPW Hosting Styrofoam Recycling Event, Paper Shredding & Textile Collection

The following information was provided by the Watertown DPW:

Watertown Public Works will be hosting a Recycling Event for residents on Saturday, November6th at the Jewish Day School located at 57 Stanley Avenue in Watertown, MA. Elements of the event include Styrofoam collection, paper shredding and textile collection. HELPSY, the northeast’s largest clothing collector, will have a truck and staff on hand to help with textile collection—diverting these items from disposal at local landfills. Watertown has also formed a partnership with HELPSY to offer residents weekly curbside pick-up of clothing and other household textiles. Beginning November 5th, pickups can be scheduled online at www.helpsy.co/watertownma. According to the EPA, Textile waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the United States … occupying nearly 5% of all landfills.
