Arsenal Center on the Arts Will Host Watertown Inauguration

Watertown’s elected officials will be sworn in at an inauguration ceremony to take place at the Arsenal Center for the Arts. The ceremony will be held in the Charles Mosesian Theater, 321 Arsenal St., in the Arsenal on the Charles Complex on Monday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m.

Those elected to the Town Council, School Committee and Library Board of Trustees will be sworn in that night. A reception will follow.

Get Rid of Your Styrofoam, Shred Paper and Dispose of Your Tires

The Watertown Department of Public Works will hold a special recycling event to get rid of some of your hard to dispose of waste, plus shred your paper documents. The event will be held on Saturday, Jan. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Watertown Recycling Center on Green River Way. To get there from Watertown Square, take Pleasant Street west, turn right on Bridge Street, left on Waltham Street and left on Green River Way. Recycle your styrofoam products – trays, cups, peanuts and packaging.

Watertown Boys & Girls Club Gets Into the Holiday Spirit

The Christmas spirit could be felt around the Watertown Boys & Girls Club on Tuesday, with children wearing festive hats, making Christmas crafts and visiting Santa Claus. The annual Youth Member Holiday Party was a big hit with the members of the club. Nearly 200 showed up to take part in the various activities. “I expected 150 members but there are more than that. I would say 175,” said Boys & Girls Club Executive Director Renee Gaudette.

WHS Sports: Basketball Teams Claim Victories, Hockey Teams Fall

The Watertown basketball teams both claimed home victories Wednesday night in a day full of action for the Raiders. The boys basketball team grabbed its first win of the year. Watertown beat visiting Burlington 57-43 and improved to 1-3. The Raiders will return to the WHS Gym on Jan. 2 to take on Waltham at 7 p.m.
Senior forward Felicia Korte scored 11 points to help the Raiders girls basketball team beat Burlington 43-27.

Watertown Group Pushing for Smart Gun Lock Law in Massachusetts

The Progressive Watertown group has started an online petition to urge Attorney General Maura Healey to create a law mandating that all new guns sold in Massachusetts have smart tech lock technology on them so only the owner can use them. The group’s founder, Richard Marcus, said the effort grew out of a campaign issue of Warren Tolman’s when he was running for Attorney General. The desire to do something to make guns safer goes even farther back for Marcus. “I’ve been working on this issue since the Newtown tragedy,” Marcus said. “I am tired of going to vigils and memorials for gun tragedies.”

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Services Around Watertown

Churches around Watertown will celebrate Christ’s birth with Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services. See the times and locations here. First Parish of Watertown (35 Church St.) Dec. 24, Christmas Eve Candlelight Service 4:30 and 6 p.m. Includes the adult choir, candlelight and a homily (two services are exactly the same). Social hour in between the services at approximately 5:15 p.m. including a cookies pot luck.

Come out and enjoy Watertown’s athletic fields and take part in the Recreation Department’s Winter Vacation program, and see when you can head to the library. 

The Watertown Free Public Library will be open on Dec. 24 from 9 a.m. to noon, and will be closed on Christmas Day. The library will reopen on Saturday and resume normal hours over the weekend (9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday). If you go, check out the library’s new iMacs! The Recreation Department will open Victory Field and the courts at Casey Park during the holidays.
