WHS Sports: Win Over Stoneham Earns Football Team a Playoff Spot and More

The Watertown football team looks headed to the MIAA Div. 4 playoffs for the third year in a row after the Raiders beat Stoneham Friday at Victory Field. In a key game for the playoff picture, the Middlesex League contest was a back and forth affair, with junior quarterback Deon Smith providing the late heroics. Watertown fell behind in the first quarter, but in the third quarter, Raiders’ quarterback Deon Smith put the Raiders ahead 7-6 with a 6-yard touchdown run. Zach Rimsa scored on his own 6-yard run in the third to give the Raiders a 14-6 lead.

Watertown Comes Together to Bring Awareness to Addiction

Comic Jack Lynch had a bit of a hard time getting laughs from the audience at the Watertown High School Gym Wednesday night, but people were focused on a serious issue facing the town – addiction to opiates and heroin. The program was the main public event for the Erase the Stigma Week, a series of events organized by a recently formed coalition known as WATERtown, (Watertown Access to Treatment, Education and Resources). The evening featured some very serious discussions of addiction, opioids and other drugs. The underlying message, however, is that addiction is a disease and treatment is available – and it works. Addiction has taken a toll locally and nationally.

Youth Sports: Softball Has Chilly End to Season, Cheerleaders Unite

The Watertown Youth Softball teams wrapped up their fall season during a weekend in which they had to wrap up tight to beat the cold. The 10U, 12U and 14U Fast-Pitch softball teams finished their Fall Season this past weekend. With morning temperatures in the 30’s and slowly warming to the low 40’s the girls competed with the Wellesley Raiders in double-header action on the frost covered fields. The 10U girls lost the twin-bill but had two very competitive games going 7-5 and 5-3. The 12U girls were able to finish their season with two ‘W’s in a slugfest with scores of 16-15 and 13-12.

Watertown Field Hockey’s Record Streak a Family Affair

Watertown’s field hockey players hugged and danced on the field after setting a new national record for the most straight unbeaten games by a high school team Wednesday afternoon, but they were also quick to acknowledge the players that game before them. After beating Melrose 6-0 and extending their unbeaten streak to 154 games, the Raiders invited all the former players in the stands to come down to pose with them for the throngs of media at Victory Field. They came in droves, some with children in hand. Coach Eileen Donahue was glad to see her former players in attendance. “Once you are a Watertown player, you are always a Watertown player,” Donahue said.
