Scholarships Available for Kids Afternoon Activity Camp

This school year it is more important than ever that your child have the opportunity to be active and social in a safe environment. Ballroom in Boston is offering a brand new program: After School Activity Camp to get your kids moving after spending hours sitting in front of a screen! And through generous donations by Watertown Savings Bank and Cunniff PTO we are able to offer scholarships for families who need a helping hand to make participation possible. 

The October classes include Kids Yoga and the ever popular Open Gym. The class is 1.5 hours in length so you will have time to run errands, work, or enjoy a few quiet moments at home; all while knowing your child is having a great time in a healthy and safe environment. Our classes will be socially distant and require masks/face coverings to keep all participants safe.

Find Out About the Microenterprise Grants, Deadline Approaching

Businesses with five or fewer employees can apply for microenterprise grants. The following information was provided by the Watertown Department of Community Development & Planning:

Building on its commitment to supporting Watertown residents during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Town of Watertown has established a $175,000 emergency rental assistance program. The program will allow income-eligible tenants to apply for up to three months assistance if they have lost income and are having trouble paying rent as a result of the pandemic. The deadline to complete the application is Thursday, September 24. “During this difficult time, it is important that we help Watertown residents stay in their homes and help ensure their health and safety,” said Assistant Town Manager Steven Magoon.

Watertown Firefighter Graduates from Mass. Fire Academy

Firefighter Michael Lanzo recently graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy. Fire Chief Bob Quinn announced that a Watertown firefighter graduated from the Massachusetts Fire Academy. Michael Lanzo completed the 10 week training program in Stow.  Due to the COVID-19 situation the graduation ceremony was limited to the graduates only. “Lanzo has returned to the firehouse to serve the citizens of Watertown,” Quinn said.

Photography Exhibit Library Features Images from the New England Coast

One of the photos that will be in Joseph Weiler’s exhibit at the Watertown Library, “Bluenose II.” The work of Watertown photographer Joseph Weiler will on display at the Watertown Free Public Library in October. The exhibition features photos from around the New England Coast. Weiler sent out the following information about the exhibition:

My exhibit will be at the Watertown Public Library’s Art Gallery from October 2 thru 30, 2020. The 21-framed photographs explore our coastline from Monhegan Island’s artists to Cape Cod’s lovely beaches.

LETTER: Resident Petition Asks Town to Hire Outside Group to Help with Charter Review

Watertown’s Town Hall. Dear Watertown Citizens,

This year, our city will have the opportunity to review how our government works and make constructive changes to our Town Charter, a chance that comes only once every 10 years. As a city in Massachusetts (we are legally “the city of the town of Watertown”), we have two basic choices of government: mayor/council or town manager/council. Within those two forms, however, there are many ways to set the governing details. Whether we want it to or not, Watertown will become a very different town in the next 10 years.

Virtual Event on Paths to Recovery from Substance Use Disorder, Even During COVID-19

On Sunday, Sept. 13th at 4 PM the W.A.T.E.R.town* Task Force for Substance Use Disorder will  host a virtual event to recognize National Recovery Month. It will include nationally recognized experts, as well as a panel of local residents speaking about the stigma of substance use disorder and paths to recovery–especially during this time of Covid-19.
