Watertown Company Honored for Offering English Classes to Employees

Last week, Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development Rosalin Acosta, spoke to a packed room of business leaders, immigrants, and English language program providers at Northeastern University. She was there to present awards at an event organized by English for New Bostonians to businesses that provide English classes for their immigrant workers, but she also had a personal message to share, English for New Bostonians announced. “My parents were educators in Cuba, but they didn’t speak English and they didn’t have licenses to teach here. My mom worked in a sweater assembly line. My dad worked in a machine shop.

Tufts Health Plan Foundation Receives Award for Embracing Diversity

At its 35th anniversary annual conference, held in Boston, Grantmakers In Aging (GIA) presented the GIA Diversity Award for 2017 to the Tufts Health Plan Foundation, the GIA announced. Jackie Jenkins-Scott, a member of the board of directors of Tufts Health Plan Foundation and former president of Wheelock College, accepted the award on behalf of the Foundation and its grantees. Ms. Jenkins-Scott observed, “A key tenant of our work is honoring the community and meeting them where they are. This includes listening, following and doing what is needed to ensure their success.”

The award was established in 2003 to recognize national, regional, and local individuals, programs, and organizations that embrace diversity as a fundamental element in all levels of their work in aging. It reflects GIA’s firm belief that diversity is a critical element of strong grantmaking in aging, and that diversity encompasses, but is not limited to, age, gender, race, national origin, religious beliefs, physical abilities and characteristics, sexual orientation, economic circumstances and lifestyle, or gender expression.

New Watertown Bath & Kitchen Showroom Features Products from Around the World

The latest addition to Pleasant Street features any kind of bathroom and kitchen fixture you can imagine, with opportunities to try some of them out for yourself. Designer Bath opened its second showroom in Watertown, and hosted a grand opening on Oct. 21. The showroom features products from around the United States and across the globe, said President Jason Sevinor. The showroom is split into different areas, with kitchen sinks in one area, shower heads in another and bathroom sinks and toilets in their own locales.

Phase 3 of Arsenal Yards, with 7 Story Building, Approved by Planning Board

The third phase of the Arsenal Yards project got the go ahead from members of the Planning Board on Thursday night. 

The latest portion of the former Arsenal Mall to be approved is Building F (see plans here), a seven story structure with ground floor retail, multiple levels of parking and topped by three stories of apartments. This is the building where a grocery store may be built, according to the design team, and will be located in the space where the bridge goes over the underpass in the Arsenal Mall parking lot. The size of the building was increased from what was proposed in the Master Plan, which required the Planning Board to approve an amendment to the Master Plan along with approving the site plan. The Board approved both unanimously. Originally the building was planned to have six stories, and be 83-feet, 6-inches tall, but the new height is 89 feet, 4 inches.

Job Fair for Individuals with Visual Impairments in Cambridge

Dozens of businesses and nonprofits will meet with talented job seekers at a job fair in Cambridge as part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, according to an announcement from the organizers. WHAT:  National jobless rates are below 5 percent for the first time since 2008, but the picture is less rosy for those who are visually impaired. U.S. Census data reveals that only 40 percent of working-age adults with impaired vision are working, compared with 72 percent of the total population. Many job seekers with vision loss never get an interview, despite having the skills needed to succeed in a wide range of jobs. On Wednesday, October 25th, at the Job Fair for Individuals with Visual Impairments, the Vision Works Consortium (Perkins School for the Blind, the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind, The Carroll Center for the Blind) unites with National Braille Press and Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University to put qualified candidates face to face with recruiters from dozens of nonprofits and businesses.
