LETTER: Watertown Biosafety Committee Consultant Addresses Questions

Dear Linda,

Thank you for your letter and questions regarding the Watertown Biosafety Committee (WBSC). I consult for the Watertown Board of Health/WBSC, serve as the designee by the director of Public Health and would like to clarify some of the points you raised and answer your questions. The Biotechnology regulations were enacted to protect Watertown residents by mandating companies performing specific types of work to meet certain requirements. These regulations were developed based on regulations from surrounding communities, but in some aspects are stricter than some of our neighboring communities. For example, Watertown requires a permit for companies performing most work under Biosafety level 2 (BSL2) regardless of whether the work involves synthetic or recombinant DNA (rDNA) which is not true of all municipalities in the greater Boston area.

Screening of “My Name is Pauli Murray” Will be Followed by Discussion

The following announcement was provided by Church of the Good Shepherd:

The award-winning documentary “My Name is Pauli Murray” will be shown on Sunday, October 23 at 2 p.m. at the Watertown Free Public Library. The film portrays the Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray, whose ideas strongly influenced Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s campaign for gender equality and Thurgood Marshall’s civil rights arguments. The Rev. Dr. Murray was a non-binary Black activist, groundbreaking legal scholar, poet, and Episcopal priest who lived for a time in Greater Boston.

The 2 p.m. screening will be hosted at the library by the Church of the Good Shepherd, Watertown. A post-screening discussion will be led by the Rev. Andrew Goldhor and the Rev. Dr. Yolanda Rolle, Youth and Young Adult Missioner in the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts. The Rev. Dr. Rolle has strong ties to Emmanual Church in Boston, which the Rev. Dr. Murray considered their spiritual home.
