Watertown’s Effort to Bring MLK’s Teachings to Schools Honored at Unity Breakfast

The people who brought the teachings of Martin Luther King Jr. to the Watertown schools and the community came together, and were honored during the the 20th annual Watertown Unity Breakfast on Monday. The annual celebration on Martin Luther King Jr. Day has been put on by the World in Watertown for two decades, and at the 2020 breakfast the local efforts to teach the principles of Kingian Non-violence in town were at the forefront. The keynote speaker was one of those who trained Watertown teachers, students and police about applying King’s non-violence teachings today, and the Unity Award went to six students who spread MLK’s teachings to Watertown High School.

Watertown Recreation Has Tons of Activities This Winter

The Watertown Recreation Department announced it is offering the following program opportunities. The registration information is included below, posted on the Watertown Recreation Website www.recreation.watertown-ma.gov and in the Watertown Recreation Office in the Town Hall. Space is limited and participants are accepted on a first come first serve basis. Registrations will not be accepted at the site of the program. Please send recreation programming registrations to the Recreation Office.

Watertown Students Make Art Inspired by MLK for Monday’s Unity Breakfast

Artwork created by Lowell School students. Ms. Jaclyn Zywocinski & Ms. Christine Talamas and their kindergarten & 1st grade students at the J.R. Lowell Elementary School created the centerpiece art for the annual Unity Breakfast while learning about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 

Students talked about how it doesn’t matter what the color your skin is… we are all so special, different and kind.  And all hands, even small ones, can help the world! The Unity Breakfast will take place on Monday, Jan. 20.

Scouts Hosting Fund Raiser With Pasta, Auction & Circus Performers

Watertown Troop 30 will host a Pasta & Auction event, which also includes entertainment from circus performers. The event will be on Feb. 1, 2020, at the Watertown-Belmont United Methodist Church, 80 Mt. Auburn St., beginning at 6 p.m. The event is handicap accessible from the parking lot to the left of the church. Dinner will be served downstairs hall for dinner, and circus performances will be held in the gym.

First Public Meeting on Watertown Bicycle & Pedestrian Plan Coming Up

Find out about the Watertown Bicycle & Pedestrian Plan and share your experiences to identify priorities and problem areas in Town. Town officials provided the following information:

The meeting will be held at the Watertown Middle School Cafeteria, 68 Waverley Ave., Watertown, MA 02472 on Monday, Jan. 27, 20202, from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Watertown encourages active transportation — walking, biking and transit — to help reduce congestion, and improve both air quality and public health. The Watertown Bicycle & Pedestrian Plan aims to help achieve those goals by identifying future improvements to the Town’s streets and walkways. Join us for a discussion on the future of Watertown’s bicycle and pedestrian transportation networks and tell us what you would like to see.

Watertown was featured as part of a recent episode of WCVB Channel 5’s Chronicle. The piece focused on what residents already know: Watertown is the place to be! They highlighted the town’s Armenian community and visited Massis Bakery, and visited the Cigar and Lounge in the East End.
