Watertown Veterans Agent Hosting Office Hours at Shutt Detachment

The Marine Corps League Pvt. Charles Shutt Detachment in Watertown. The Watertown Veterans Services Office will kick off a series of office hours for veterans on Jan. 31 at the Shutt Detachement. Watertown Veterans Agent Patrick George decided to hold office hours to give the town’s veterans a chance to speak to him, ask questions and discuss plans for the upcoming veterans’ holidays.

Spaces Available in Winter Wellness Classes That Start This Week

A pair of classes being hosted by Live Well Watertown start this week, and there are still spaces available. Beginning Wednesday is a new eight-week class called Circle Walking, a Chinese martial arts and meditation in motion program. It is also a good way to keep moving during the cold months. On Friday, the two-part Beat the Winter Blues program begins. During the class you will learn about Seasonal Affective Disorder, and learn strategies to cope with it.

Organization Offering Family Mental Health Support Group

The following announcement was provided by the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI):

Family Mental Health support group: NAMI Family Mental Health Support Group is a free, structured, confidential peer-led support group for the families of individuals living with mental illness.  

A support group will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 7:30 – 9 pm at the Newton Wellesley Hospital, at 2014 Washington Street in Newton 02461, on the second floor of the main building in the Bowles Conference Center.  Parking will be validated. This is organized by the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI).

Dance Classes for Kids & Adult Available Through Watertown Recreation

Watertown Recreation will team with a local dance studio to present dance classes for children and adults. The Recreation Department provided the following information:

Aladdin Kids Dance Camp

Come learn fun Dance/Broadway/Hip Hop routines to “One Jump” and “Prince Ali” from Aladdin. This course will allow students to learn beginner/intermediate age appropriate choreography, try different styles of dance, enhance presentation skills, learn the basics of being on stage, and gain self- confidence. No experience necessary. Who: Grades: 3 – 5

When: Thursdays, February 13, 2020 – May 14, 2020 (Meets once a week for 10 weeks).

Christmas Tree Disposal & Styrofoam Recycling Event

With the holidays over, it’s time to take down the tree and get rid of the styrofoam packaging. The Watertown Department of Public Works can help you with both of these tasks. Christmas trees will be picked up from the curbside on your regular trash collection day through the month of January. Please no ornaments or plastic bags. The trees will be chipped.

Community Preservation Committee Invites Public to Interactive Forum

The Community Preservation Committee invites the public to find out more about the Community Preservation Act during an interactive public forum. Attendees can share their ideas to help the CPC plan to spend the CPA funds on affordable housing, open space/recreation, and historic preservation. The event will be held Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2020 from 7-9 p.m. at Tufts Health Plan, in the Mt. Auburn Rooms North & South, 705 Mt.

Watertown Will Celebrate 20th Unity Breakfast in Honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Watertown will celebrate its 20th Unity Breakfast to remember Martin Luther King Jr. at 8:30 a.m., Jan. 20 at the Hellenic Cultural Center, 25 Bigelow Ave., Watertown. The breakfast has become a Watertown tradition, drawing over 400 guests. This year’s honorary host will be Deanne Galdston, superintendent of the Watertown Public Schools. The keynote speaker is Jonathan Lewis, senior level Kingian Nonviolence trainer, Positive Peace Warrior Network.
