Find Out When Watertown’s Winter Parking Ban Starts

Watertown Chief of Police Michael P. Lawn has announced the 2019-2020 Winter Parking Ban dates. Effective December 2, 2019, and continuing to April 1, 2020, the Winter Parking Ban will be in effect and strictly enforced. The regulation reads in part; “No vehicle may remain on any public way for more than one hour between the hours of 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. all days of the week.”

For residents who lack sufficient off-street parking, the Town allows for temporary parking at any municipal parking lot and other locations noted:

• The police station at 552 Main Street (visitor’s parking lot only) • Any public school parking lot • Marion Road parking lot at Victory Field • O’Connell Park, (lot at the corner of Boylston Street and Mt Auburn Street) • Grove Street parking lot at Filippello Park (No parking in the spaces along the driveway)

Please note that these locations may be used free of charge, however vehicles may only use available spaces after 7 p.m. and must be moved/removed by 7 a.m. the following day.

The 2019 Donohue’s Turkey Trot is Around the Corner, See How to Join the Fun

Register now for the 2019 Donohue’s Turkey Trot. One of Watertown’s Thanksgiving tradition, the Donohue’s Turkey Trot, will take place the morning of Turkey Day, and registration is now open. The 5K fun run and walk raises money for the Watertown Boys & Girls Club. It begins at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 28 beginning outside Donohue’s, 87 Bigelow Ave., Watertown.

SMART Recovery Support Group Moves to Mt. Auburn St.

A SMART support group holds meetings for family and friends has moved to Church on Mt. Auburn Street. Organizers sent out the following information:

When someone uses drugs or alcohol to excess, the entire family is affected. For decades people turned to Alcoholics or Narcotics Anonymous and its family-focused support group Al-Anon. But AA isn’t for everyone.

Applications Available for 2019 Watertown Healthy Grants

The Watertown Community Foundation (WCF) announces the release of the Fall 2019 Healthy Watertown Grants to support organizations that work to create new or existing programs to keep our community healthy. A total of $10,000 will be distributed through these health grants. Past Healthy Grant awardees have included: Local food pantries; nutrition and meal programs for school age children and seniors; programs and services fostering healthy aging; mental health first aid training for first responders; programs designed to combat the opioid crisis and provide services and supports for individuals and families struggling with substance use disorders; and health-related programs for infants and their families. Eligible organizations may apply for a maximum of $2500. The average amount awarded will range from $500 to $2500.

Watertown Mall Hosting Two Day Job Fair

Job seekers can head to the Watertown Mall for a job fair on Nov. 7 and 8. See the announcement below:

Come to see the full time, part time, and seasonal work opportunities that the mall can provide. Some of the participating stores are Target, Best Buy and Chase. The Watertown Mall has abundant parking spaces for those driving here, and is also accessible by MBTA Bus routes 70 and 70A.

Watertown Mall Hosting Flu Clinic, Blood Pressure Screening

The Watertown Mall will host two health and wellness events on Nov. 1: a flu clinic and a blood pressure screening. See the following announcements for details. Flu Clinic

The Watertown Mall and the Watertown Health Department are partnering up for a flu clinic at the mall on Friday, Nov. 1, beginning at 10 a.m. This two-hour long event will be held in the back hallway of the mall, near Target and is free for all customers over six months old.

New Technology Added to Children’s Room at Watertown Library

Libraries are vital access points for technology in any community, and the Watertown Free Public Library is no exception. Recently, the WFPL Children’s Room has made some changes to technology offerings that fit perfectly with the library’s mission to “connect people to ideas, information, education, creative opportunities, and each other.”

In September, the Children’s Room began lending Launchpads for in-library use. These are small, portable touchscreen tablets pre-loaded with early learning games and puzzles that feature everything from farm animals, dinosaurs, and the human body to favorite characters like Rescue Bots and My Little Pony.
