Watertown Library Hosting Talk on Becoming a U.S. Citizen

The latest Watertown Free Public Library’s Democracy Talks event focuses on becoming a United States Citizen. The free event will be held on Sept. 18, 2018 at 7 p.m.

What Does it Take to Become a U.S. Citizen? WHEN: Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.

WHAT: All are welcome at this open forum about the naturalization process, featuring Project Literacy citizenship instructor Anne Benaquist and a panel of new Americans.

Watertown Rotary Hosting Senior Citizen Cookout on Sunday

Watertown seniors are invited to the Rotary Club of Watertown’s Senior Citzen Cookout on Sunday, Sept. 16. This is a free event, with food, entertainment and more. 

The event will be from noon to 3 p.m. at the Sons of Italy Hall at 520 Pleasant St. in Watertown. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.

Entertainment will be provided by DJ Rock’n Richard Picceri and Maria’s School of Dance.

Fire Hydrant Flushing Program Starting Soon, Water May Become Discolored

The following information was provided by the Department of Public Works:

Watertown’s Department of Public Works will begin flushing fire hydrants this week, and will continue for the next six weeks. The Department of Public Works sent out the following announcement:

In order to maintain the high quality of drinking water in Watertown, the annual program of flushing mains will begin during the week of Sept. 17, 2018. Flushing hours are Monday through Friday 7 p.m. to midnight. Consumers may experience discolored water at times during the weeks of Sept.

Mount Auburn Hospital Hosts Free Program to Help People Quit Smoking

Mount Auburn Hospital Hosts Freedom From Smoking®. 8-Week Program Begins on Thursday, September 27, 2018. WHAT: Mount Auburn Hospital and Newton Wellesley Hospital are pleased to
host Freedom From Smoking®, an eight-week program developed by the
American Lung Association®. This program provides an overview on how
to overcome tobacco addiction by addressing the physical, mental and
social aspects of addiction. Topics include managing stress, avoiding
weight gain, developing a new self image, how to stay smoke free for good
and more.

Watertown Boys & Girls Club Reopening Soon, Hosting Grand Opening

The Watertown Boys & Girls Club’s renovation is nearly complete and the club will soon reopen, and have a grand opening celebration. The Club will have an open house and grand opening on Saturday, Sept. 22 from 11 a.m.–4 p.m. The event will feature the Boston Red Sox World Series Trophy from 12-3 p.m. Attendees can see the trophy and pose for photos with it. The Watertown Boys & Girls Club will be opening its after-school drop-in program on Monday, Sept. 24.

Bank Provides Grant for Boy’s & Girls Club’s Girls Science, Technology Program

The Watertown Boys & Girls Club provided the following information:

Watertown Boys & Girls Club a youth development organization providing after-school and summer programming, today announced it has received a $10,000 Targeted Grant from Eastern Bank, America’s oldest and largest mutual bank. The grant will support the implementation of “GIRLS ROCK”, an after-school STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) program specifically geared towards elementary and middle school girls. Each year, the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation’s Targeted Grant program supports hundreds of community-based organizations working for progress on a specific issue in Eastern’s New England footprint. In 2018, in celebration of the Bank’s 200th anniversary and to honor its first depositor, Rebecca Sutton, Targeted Grants have been designated to support organizations addressing a range of issues that disproportionately impact women, such as sexual assault, domestic violence, human trafficking, health care, pay equity, and senior management and board representation. Watertown Boys & Girls Club is among 170 nonprofits each receiving a $10,000 grant.
