Cable Show Will Tell the Story of One of Watertown’s Fallen Veterans

For years, Bob Kaprielian has been interviewing Watertown’s veterans to find out about the stories of serving in the United States military, but his latest episode of A Veteran’s Story will be different because it focuses on one of the town’s fallen heroes. Kaprielian interviewed family members, friends and those who were impacted by Lt. Paul Sullivan, who died in action in Vietnam on Aug. 9, 1968. Sullivan went into the Army Rangers and he trained at Fort Benning, Georgia, before being shipped to Vietnam. He arrived during some of the fiercest fighting of the Vietnam War.

Boy’s & Girl’s Club Members Featured During Annual Spring Auction

The best of the Watertown Boy’s and Girl’s Club was on display at the Annuals Spring Auction, presented by the people who know the place best – the club members. Guests at the fundraiser at the Oakley Country Club learned about activities at the club and recent improvements from youngsters who attend the club. The club has about 1,000 members and the facility on Whites Avenue attracts about 130 members a day. One member, Kat Nilov, read the essay that won her the club’s “Youth of the Year” award. She said that when she and her mother moved to Watertown from Staten Island she was in middle school and had not friends.

Bestselling Authors Speaking at Benefit for Hospital’s Breast Center

Mount Auburn Hospital presents Pink Pages, an evening featuring renowned author Alice Hoffman to benefit the hospital’s Hoffman Breast Center on Monday, May 22, 2017 beginning at 6 p.m. at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge. The evening will feature readings and anecdotes from popular best-selling authors Diane Ackerman, David Baldacci, Geraldine Brooks, Andre Dubus, III, Elin Hilderbrand, Ann Hood and ZZ Packer. Emmy Award-winning arts and entertainment critic, advocate, motivational speaker, and cancer crusader Joyce Kulhawik will serve as the evening’s emcee. A bit about the evening’s participants:

Alice Hoffman has been called “America’s literary heir to the Brothers Grimm” and her luminous “fables of the everyday” have enchanted readers since the publication of her first novel, Property Of, in 1977. Her novel, Dovekeepers, spent weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and was adapted as a television miniseries in 2015.Hoffman has written over thirty books including Practical Magic and Aquamarine, both of which were made into major motion pictures, as well as Oprah Book Club selection, Here on Earth.

2 Sisters Will Talk About Their Journey Through Mental Illness

During the month of May, communities across the country are bringing awareness to mental health. The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports 1 in 5 Americans will be affected by a mental health condition in their lifetime and every American is affected or impacted through their friends and family and can do something to help others. Wayside Youth & Family Support Network announced it will join the Department of Mental Health to present “How We Got Through,” a conversation between sisters about mental illness and recovery. Meg Hutchinson and her sister, Tess Adams, will engage in a conversation about their remarkable sibling’s journey of survival and recovery through the years since Meg’s Bipolar 1 Disorder diagnosis. Meg Hutchinson is an award-winning songwriter, poet, and recording artist on Red House Records and has toured widely in North America and Europe.

Walk to Fight Stigma of Mental Illness, Support Group for Families Dealing with Mental Illness

The annual NAMI 5K Walk, to fight the stigma associated with mental illness, will take place on Saturday, May 13 at Artesani Park at 1255 Soldiers Field Road in Brighton.   

The entire community is welcome to join in this walk and rally which promote awareness and benefit entire families.
