Newton Firefighters Make Hefty Donation to Family of Fallen Watertown Firefighter

The Watertown Fire Department received a visit from their friends in the Newton Fire Department this week, who came bearing a generous gift for the family of Joseph Toscano. The Newton contingent delivered a check for $10,000 for the family of Toscano, who lost his life in the line of duty on March 17. Newton Firefighter Union President Tom Lopez presented the donation along with firefighters Brian Albano and Brian McNamara and Deputy Chief Mike McNamara, according to Watertown Deputy Fire Chief Tom McManus. They gave the check to members of Group 2, the group on which Toscano worked for most of his 20+ year career. Watertown Deputy Chief Bob Quinn, Union President Rob Mannix and members of Group 2 posed with the Newton Firefighters for a photo to commemorate the visit.

Congresswoman Clark Holding Forum on Impact of Opioids on Families

Congresswoman Katherine Clark will hold a forum about the impact of opioids on families. 

The event, called The Traumatic Impact of the Opioid Epidemic on Families, will be held on Tuesday, April 11 from 6-8 p.m. at McLean Hospital’s Piece Hall, 115 Mill St. in Belmont. Members of the community, including those who have been affected by the opioid epidemic, care advocates, and care providers, are invited to share concerns, stories, and ideas about the epidemic’s impact on our communities. Expert panelists include: Aimee Manzoni-D’Arpino, Co-chair, Addiction Policy Forum Family Committee, Hilary Smith Connery, MD, PhD, Clinical Director, Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse, McLean Hospital and Assistant Professor, Harvard Medical School, and Matthew A. Robinson, Ph.D., staff psychologist within the Law Enforcement, Active Duty, Emergency Responder (LEADER) Depression, Anxiety, & Stress Outpatient Program at McLean Hospital and instructor of psychology at Harvard Medical School. Watertown Library to be Closed Two Days This Week

The Watertown Free Public Library will be closed on April 6 and 7 so carpet replacement work can take place. Other sections of the library have been closed during the the project, but the building will be closed on Thursday, April 6 and Friday April 7 for the whole day, the library announced. The library has more than 30,000 visitors a year, and more than 3.5 million since the renovated library opened in 2004. Find out more about the project here.  

Flood Watch Issued in Watertown for Heavy Rains Thursday, Friday

Steady rains on Thursday and Friday combined with recent rain and snow could lead to street flooding and minor flooding of area rivers and streams.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch from Thursday at 8 a.m. to Friday at 8 p.m.

The area could get as much as 1.5 inches of rain over the two days, adding to rivers and streams already swollen by recent storms.

Rains could also lead to local street flooding and flooding in areas of poor drainage.

Mental Illness Support Group for Family, Friends at Newton-Wellesley Hospital

Mental Illness support group: NAMI Family Support Group is a free, structured, confidential peer-led support group for family members, caregivers and loved ones of individuals living with mental illness.  

A support group will be held on Tuesday, April 11, 7:30-9 p.m. at Newton Wellesley Hospital’s main building at 2014 Washington Street in Newton, on the second floor of the Bowles Conference Center. This is organized by the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI).

The Easter Bunny Arrives at the Watertown Mall This Week

The Watertown Mall invites the public to come to the enchanted village and see the Easter Bunny for yourself! Photographs with the Easter Bunny will be available at the Watertown Mall’s Easter Village, located near Carter’s. The Easter Bunny arrives Thursday, April 6th 2017 at 11 am! Hours of operation are 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sundays. The Easter Bunny Village will be open on the following dates: April 6-15.
