Two Youth Mental Health First Aid Trainings Available for Watertown Residents

Two Youth Mental Health First Aid trainings open to Watertown residents will be offered in November and December. A young person you know could be experiencing a mental health or substance use problem. Learn an action plan to help. The sessions will be held in Brighton and in Brookline. “Sometimes, first aid isn’t a bandage, or CPR, Sometimes, first aid is YOU!”

New Watertown Senior Center Director Speaks at Rotary Club Meeting

The Rotary Club of Watertown welcomed Watertown’s new director of Senior Services during their meeting this week. 

Anne-Marie Gagnon addressed the Rotary members about her background and vision and plans for the future of the Watertown Senior Center. The Rotary Club meets Tuesdays at noon at the Oakley Country Club. Read more about Gagnon here.

Hear About Center Housing Asylum Seekers at World in Watertown Meeting

At the upcoming World in Watertown meeting, Nov. 3, the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas, will be at the top of the agenda, the World in Watertown Group announced. Last summer Susan Klaw spent a week at the center, operated by the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) for the U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE), to house families of asylum seekers. World in Watertown meets at First Parish of Watertown, 35 Church St. Check-in starts at 7:15 p.m. The business meeting starts at 7:30 p.m.

Two Films on Syrian Refugees Draw Dozens in Watertown

On two successive October Sundays, Watertown Citizens Refugee Support Group presented 2 film events that brought home the personal side of the Syrian refugee crisis. The first film, Salam Neighbor, was released in 2016, and reveals life in the enormous Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan, to which tens of thousands of Syrians have been fleeing since 2012 when it first opened. This film was produced by 2 American filmmakers who received permission to live and film at Zaatari for one month. Following the film, guest speaker Dr. Omar Salem of the Karam Foundation (www.karamfoundation.org) led an animated and informative discussion. Dr. Salem has led numerous missions to Syrian refugee camps, organizing free dental and medical care for children.

Final Watertown Farmers Market of the Year Has a Halloween Theme

The final Watertown Farmers Market of the season will feature a Halloween theme, complete with a cauldron full of treats. “Come in costume or as you are. We’ll have little toys for the little ones (non-candy) among the vendors and a special cauldron where adults can draw among a collection of tricks and treats,” Farmers Market organizers said. Congresswoman Clark Highlights Event Raising Awareness of Heroin Crisis in Watertown

The second annual Erase the Stigma event will be held in November, and the featured speaker will be Congresswoman Katherine Clark. Last year, W.A.T.E.R.town Task Force for Substance Use Disorder presented the first Erase the Stigma event to raise awareness about the crisis of heroin and opioids impacting Watertown. This year’s event will be held on Thursday, Nov. 17 from 7:30-9 p.m. at Watertown Middle School, 68 Waverley Ave. in Watertown.

Concert and Breakfast Planned for Watertown’s Veterans Day Observances

The Watertown Veterans Services Office presents two events to mark Veterans Day this November. 

On Thursday November 10, 2016, Watertown proudly presents the World Famous Hal McIntyre Orchestra. The group is directed by Watertown’s Don Pentleton and stars Steve Marvin. The concert will be at the Watertown Middle School, 68 Waverley Ave. The performance will be from 7-9:30 p.m. and the doors will open at 6:30 p.m. This is a free concert and open to the public. Watertown Church Holding Non-Partisan Prayer Service on Eve of Election

A Watertown church invites residents to attend a non-partisan prayer services the evening before the Presidential Election. The Church of the Good Shepherd will put on the Multi-faith Prayer Service on the Eve of the Election. This non-partisan gathering of people of many faiths will offer time to prepare our hearts and minds for the day ahead. We will pray for ourselves as voters, for the safety of all candidates and voters, for fair and transparent election processes, and for a peaceful and just future for all who call this nation home, according to the announcement from the church. Prayers, poetry, song, silence, and some tea to follow.
