Forum Planned by Tri-Community Group Working to End Homelessness

Three communities, including Watertown, have teamed up to try to end homelessness, and a forum is planned on Sunday, April 26. To raise awareness of the unprecedented growth in the number of homeless families and individuals in Massachusetts, the Tricommunity Coalition to End Homelessness is sponsoring “The Many Faces of Homelessness,” a forum to discuss homelessness in the communities of Belmont, Waltham and Watertown. Supported by local civic and religious organizations, the event focuses attention on the realities of the homeless populations in our towns. The Forum will be held on Sunday, April 26 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at St. Joseph Parish Hall, 130 Common Street, Belmont.

Council Approves Town Building Renovations, Vehicle Purchases

Watertown’s capital improvement plans will focus on repairs to the some schools, library, two fire stations and Town Hall, as well as purchasing new vehicles. Tuesday night, the Council approved the Fiscal 2016-20 Capital Improvement Plan Tuesday night. See the entire list of recommendations adopted by the council by clicking here. The Council is working on the Fiscal 2016 budget, which begins on July 1, 2015. But it also includes recommendations from Fiscal 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Help Out on One Boston Day at Watertown’s Filippello Park

Volunteers are sought to help clean up Filippello Park on One Boston Day. 

Classic Rock Radio Station, WZLX – 100.7, is recruiting its listeners to help clean up Filippello Park as a service to the town of Watertown on April 15, 2015 from 10 a.m. to noon, in commemoration of One Boston Day, “a holiday aimed at honoring ‘the resiliency, generosity and strength of the city’ on the anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings.”

Watertown Church Hosting Big Rummage Sale

The First Parish of Watertown, 35 Church St., is holding its annual rummage sale on Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be books, audio and video tapes, DVD’s, children’s clothes, linens and white goods, kitchen and household items, small electronics and appliances, arts and crafts, bric-a-brac, sporting goods, toys and games, small furniture and many more treasures. Come and shop!

Learn About Diabetes from the Watertown Health Department

The Watertown Health Department will host a free lecture about diabetes at the Watertown Mall. 

Join Public Health Nurse Wil van Dinter RN on April 17 at 10 a.m. and learn about the types of diabetes, most common signs and symptoms of diabetes, tests and diagnosis for diabetes, and ways to control your diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 9.3 percent or about 29.1 million people in the U.S. have diabetes. From those about 8.1 million are undiagnosed. Undiagnosed and untreated diabetes can cause eye, nerve, and kidney complications. This free health lecture will be held in the Old Country Buffet. In addition, from 10 a.m.-noon, free blood pressure screenings will be provided by St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center.

Group Uniting Efforts to End Homelessness, Hosting Forum on April 26

Find out about the many ways homelessness impacts our community at a forum hosted by the TriCommunity Coalition to End Homelessness. Marathoner Running Boston Race for Operation American Soldier

The 2015 Boston Marathon will be Peter Walker’s second, but this year he wanted to raise money for a good cause. That’s when he discovered the Watertown-based charity that sends care packages to American troops overseas. Walker searched for a charity and got a suggestion while he was dining. “I was in Conley’s in Watertown talking with someone,” Walker said. “I said it would be nice to run for a foundation.

Meet Dic Donohue at the Watertown Strong Blood Drive

On Saturday, April 11, the Watertown Strong Blood Drive will be held in honor of MBTA Police Officer Dic Donohue. 

When Donohue was injured in the shootout with Boston Marathon Bombing suspects on April 2013, he required more than 46 blood products when Mount Auburn Hospital doctors saved his life. “Trauma patients like Officer Donohue are just one example of why it’s so important to donate blood or platelets,” said the Red Cross announcement. “It’s blood on the shelves that saves lives before, during and after disasters.” Donohue will be on had on Saturday, April 11 the Watertown Strong Blood Drive in Honor of Officer Dic Donohue will be held at Watertown High School, 50 Columbia St. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

He will be joined by Boston Marathon Bombing Survivor Heather Abbott, Watertown Police Captain Ray Dupuis, Mount Auburn Hospital Vice President, Planning and Marketing Michael O’Connell and American Red Cross Massachusetts Blood Services Region CEO Jeff Meyer.
